Want to help an MMO wed its way into
the Guinness Book of World Records? All you need is a copy of Rift, an open schedule on Valentine's Day (which we're hoping you don't have), and someone
else from the fantasy MMO who's willing to marry you... at least for a
day.
Trion Worlds issued the challenge to
promote its incoming 1.7 update, which will add the ability to get
married in Telera when it arrives in early February. Players who wish to
participate in the record breaking event are instructed to tie the
knot with their significant other between 9am PST on February 14 and 9am
PST on February 15. To do so, participants are instructed to visit a
marriage vendor in their capitol city, buy a ring, and use it to pop the
question to their soon-to-be life partner.
After, they can enjoy an actual in-game ceremony with guests at
Hammerknell and Orphiel's Spire, or even petition Trion to
send one of its own people to officiate.
Telara marriages are open to any two
consenting players, regardless of sex or race; however, starstruck
lovers from opposing factions will not be allowed to wed. Sorry, no Romeo and Juliet stories this time.
“MMOs
are the most fun when you’re playing with friends and loved ones,”
said Scott Hartsman, Trion's CCO and Rift's executive producer.
“Whether exploring Telara and adventuring with your significant
other, or meeting up with geographically distant friends in a virtual
pub, the MMO experience is about bringing people together, and our
new weddings and gatherings exemplify this philosophy. We think the
Valentine’s Day record attempt is a unique way for players to
celebrate Rift’s
spirit of camaraderie while making real-world history.”
To
further promote Rift's romantic wedding features, Trion is offering all participants a special “Tier
of Knots” title and encouraging newly engaged Rifters to
write in with their in-game love story for a chance to be married by
the studio's own community manager, Elrar, on the day of the World Record attempt.
Rest
assured, eager players who get hitched before February 14 can
purchase and utilize Divorce Papers and then remarry on Valentine's day
to get the title and take part in the event. Oh, how
romantic.
