Obsidian Entertainment is tweaking parts of the free upgrade path to The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition, a remastered package of the developer's capitalist satire.
The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition compiled the base game and both of its expansions a few years ago alongside a series of new technical improvements, fixes, and the addition of grenades that came with two recent updates.
Just last month, the studio announced that the base game would be delisted on platforms where Spacer's Choice is already available (PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5) and promised that anyone who had The Outer Worlds in their digital library before May 27 would be entitled to get Spacer's Choice Edition for free. "That's right, free," it said at the time... although, many players found they were locked out of the game's souped up version and prompted to buy the game again when the time came.
"The Spacer's Choice Edition upgrade was intended to say 'Thanks' to anyone who purchased The Outer Worlds base game by providing them a free upgrade to the newly improved version," the developer now says in an online post. "However, due to various entitlement restrictions and backend issues we weren't able to provide this as smoothly as we wished and our players are, rightfully, upset."
"If you purchased the base game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 between 4/30 and 5/27, or have any issues with the upgrade, please contact our support team and we'll work with you to make it right. Sorry again for the frustration around this," it continues. "Additionally, the upgrade will continue to be free to PC players if they own the delisted base game. Due to how entitlements work on the consoles, digital owners on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will need to own the base game + DLCs or the expansion pass to be eligible for the upgrade moving forward."
That means players with the last-gen version of the game in their libraries, even if you're now playing on a current-gen machine, will need to own The Outer Worlds, Peril on Gorgon, and Murder on Eridanos to qualify for the upgrades. That's unless you bought the game sometime between Obsidian's original announcement and the repackaged game's launch, in which case you can contact the studio's support team.
