Sonic 2 fan remake progresses, Chemical Plant Zone to be ready in February

If you recognize the name pelikan13, you probably think of him as a god among Sonic the Hedgehog fans. If you don't, you should know that his 3D remake of Emerald Hill Zone was one of the best things to happen to the little blue mascot in the past decade. And now he's at it again.

We can only begin to imagine how long it took Mr. Pelikan to completely redesign the penultimate classic platforming level. Heck, even Sega apparently doesn't have the patience for it. So we understand his initial reluctance to continue onward with his project.

Nevertheless, he says he's back and ready to take on the next level from the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Genesis game - Chemical Plant Zone.

"I did take a rather long break from it but I'm getting my enthusiasm back," he said in an online post. As for the completion date of the Chemical Plant Zone remake, "If all goes well it should be ready by early February."

If you want to play the genius's original creation, the Emerald Hill Zone 3D remake is available here. We bow our heads, and if pelikan13 manages to remake every level in Sonic 2, I'll personally buy him a drink. Hell, I'll even buy him two.

Is he doing the lost levels from the beta too? I'd love to see HD Genocide City. [/fanboy] No, seriously. This guy is a hero. He deserves to replace Sonic Team at the moment.

@Fuzunga: No, it isn't. Pause the video while Sonic is standing still.

That is amazing, I'm downloading it right now. I don't get Sega though. They would make millions if they remade Sonic 1 & 2 like this. They could just hire this guy and it'd turn out fine. If this were Valve, they actually would hire this guy.

I'm assuming that's a mockup because that's the Sonic 4 character model in that shot there.

That is so damn beautiful. Can't wait for february!

I, along with most sonic plebs, would pay out the ass for a hd remake of all the games that are of that quality like in the trial version linked on this site. Graphics are amazing and the physics sh*t all over Floaty the Hedgehog 4.

Ye flipping gods. Why has Sega not yet fired the entire Sonic Team and let this guy form a new one? Oh, wait, that's right. Sega's business plan has nothing to do with making good games or honoring time-tested and/or beloved franchises, and everything to do with slapping the mascots of said franchises onto a still-steaming pile of drek and raking in money from the gullible diehards convinced that the law of averages will eventually rear its head to give them a game worth playing.

Cool... but does it have Blast Processing!?
  • Mattdawarrior - December 21, 2010 6:36 p.m.

While admittedly, not a Sonic fan. This looks pretty damn awesome for a fan remake.

Holy sheet that's awesome! Does he remake the music, too, or just the levels?
