Red Faction: Armageddon | Full Access Preview

Smashing stuff is pretty fun, especially when you can smash just about anything you see, as was the case in 2009’s Red Faction: Guerilla. That game reimagined the shooter series as an open world game where you and your trusty hammer could destroy almost anything, and we enjoyed it heartily. Now the sequel, Armageddon, is almost here, and we took the freshly released demo for a spin. Thrill as we blow up colorful aliens! Gasp as we crush things then rebuild them just as fast! Squint during the more shadowy bits to figure out what’s happening! It’s all here as Chris, Henry, and Brett escort you through the catacombs of Mars!

BONUS SILLINESS: THQ revealed today that if demo gets downloaded one million times, they’ll unlock the magical Mr. Toots in the retail game. Who’s Mr. Toots? Just a unicorn that farts insanely destructive rainbows. Enjoy his brief trailer:

I played a bit of the first Red Faction but it was quite boring, although I think its still in my cabinet somewhere. If I remember correctly it was about a mining group who was treated unfairly by their employers. The Red Faction was a group of miners that defected and became "terrorists". It looked much like that but in winding caves with minimalist design. I almost remember a "glass house you could throw stones in". Not sure if its the right reference or anything.

That was a great FAP so damn funny.

They really shouldn't have added dumb, generic and unwanted aliens into Red Faction but then to take the open world destruction of Guerilla and squeeze it into Mars' claustrophobic tunnels it seems as though the developer wants the game to be worse than the previous.

Based on my limited knowledge of the earlier Red Faction games by lurking on the official forums, these 'aliens' may actually be related to the mutants from the first red faction. Still need to see what the game itself says though.

Great FAP,wish I could check it out but the PSN is still down atm
  • BleedingHatMcGillicutty - May 4, 2011 7:49 a.m.

I just played it. It seems like a step backwards from the last one.
  • Spybreak8 - May 4, 2011 6:42 a.m.

    Yes Aliens references lol.
  • kingsmikefan - May 4, 2011 5:40 a.m.

hahaha. That was the best FAP ever. Love the puns

@TruckThunders I know there were Red Faction games before Guerrilla, I played some of Red Faction II on the Gamecube. I should have said previous game in the series, not "first game," but I am lazy. I also kinda meant first game in the context that Guerrilla felt more like a reboot (third person, new engine, in HD) than a sequel to the first two games. But yes, I knew there were Red Faction games before Guerrilla, I wasn't born on 360.

Just played the demo and I fell in love with the rebuilding tool.

@ nemesisuprising Yeah, and if I'm right, you're actually revisiting the exact same areas from the first game.
  • nemesisuprising - May 4, 2011 2:32 a.m.

@TruckThunders yeah...and as I recall being underground was a part of the original games right?

Can I just say that I'm extremely pleased with all of the FAP and Talkradar-related things that have been going on recently? Chris, Mikel, Brett, and the rest of the gang are the reason why I come to this site--more than just for the game news itself. More of them = more better website. I love you, Gamesradar. P.S. I've been a big Red Faction fan ever since the first game. I haven't had the chance to watch this video yet, but I hope it's awesome.

Dear FVDub, When you write to Volition referring to Red Faction: Guerrilla as the "first game", you may want to know that you're making yourself look like an idiot because RFG was actually the third game in the Red Faction series. I know you're lack of knowledge calls for it, but typing "Red Faction series" into Google isn't that difficult. Love, Almost everyone who knew about Red Faction before 2009.

    'Casual' difficulty? Or 'Snobby-Ass-Demographic-That-Ruins-Everything-For-HxC-Gamers' difficulty?
  • FVDub - May 4, 2011 1:50 a.m.

Dear Volition, Why did you make your first game open world on the surface of Mars and the sequel seem to take place entirely underground? I know the story calls for it, but it would be a total drag to play the whole game destroying rocks and shacks under Mars. Love, Almost everyone who played the first game

If there was a PC demo, I might download it a million times myself. Since there isn't one, I can't even download it once. Lame.
  • KielbasaNinja - May 4, 2011 1:34 a.m.

Achievement Unlocked: -5G (Finish the demo on sissy.)
