Pokemon Black and White Version 2 announced for DS, coming soon to North America

Pokemon fans have been waiting months for Nintendo and Pokemon Company to finally reveal the follow-up to last year's Pokemon Black and White. That at last happened in Japan today, but in a strange twist, the developer broke from it's third game/third color tradition. Instead, take your first look at Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2 coming soon to the DS. Yes, the Nintendo DS, not the 3DS (though obviously it'll be playable on that system too, which is pointed out in Japanese below).

Announced on a Sunday morning show in Japan and quickly confirmed by the English-speaking side, details are scarce and from the naming we can't tell if it's an update or a full sequel. In Japan the two games are called "Pokemon Black 2" and "Pokemon White 2," but the US side's use of "Version" seems to imply a new iteration on the last games instead of a fully new title. [UPDATE: Nintendo has confirmed that Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2 are scheduled for an autumn 2012 release in North America and Europe.]

Other than the two new legendaries pictured above that were unnamed but look a lot like B/W's Reshiram and Zekrom, no new pocket monsters were hinted at. [Update: Poke mastermind Junich Masuda revealed on Twitter that those two are different forms of B/W's third legendary dragon type Kyurem. They are named Black Kyurem and White Kyurem.] Will there be a new story too? Will it build on the dense plot of the last one? Will it have any features exclusive to the 3DS, similar to Silver/Gold's use of the Game Boy Color? So many questions.

We'll keep you posted just as soon as we know of any answers or international release date. We do know it's out in Japan this June. Cross your fingers that they can turn it around before the end of 2012 for the rest of the world.

WHAT THE HELL?! A new Pokemon game is always welcome in my book, but i've been sitting here with my 3DS in hand waiting and waiting and waiting for a Pokemon game that can take advantage of the new system's features, and yet they decide to release ANOTHER Pokemon game for the first DS?!?! How illogical, the 3DS has been out for over a year now :/

Thinking of the story implications of Kyurem fusion, I guess N will hear about Kyurem as the third legendary dragon and seek to fuse his dragon with it to accomplish whatever selfish "steal all pokemon" motives he has. Sounds good to me, but only if the story is more the focus and they find something to keep you going besides 8 gym leaders and elite four. Don't get me wrong, that's fine, but a temporary departure from the formula for an actual story would be welcome. Also, the gr community should be ashamed for having not mentioned Carolyn in 84 comments.

I'm pretty convinced you never even played Black/White given you know nothing about N as a character...
  • rainn'sgaydar - February 27, 2012 10:38 a.m.

Huh? Maybe I've forgotten specifics, but don't get high and mighty over a mistake. And from that one mistake you assume I know nothing and haven't played the game. Go crawl in a hole. For the record, I played both versions and caught them all, but that was months ago.
  • KnowYourPokemon - February 27, 2012 11:10 a.m.

I'd expect someone who's played both games to know that N isn't actually a villain. I haven't touched the game since about a month after launch and I can tell you a pretty main part of the story... It would be like someone who played red/blue not being able to tell you Giovanni/The 8th gym leader is the leader of team rocket...
  • rainn'sgaydar - February 27, 2012 3:46 p.m.

Sometimes expectations don't meet reality. Example: I'd expect someone who saw my mistake to correct it, not accuse me of not playing the game(s). See how that works? Why can't someone remember that a story is good without remembering specifics, even if they're main plot points? Or get names mixed up, as I did?

N isn't the main villain, Ghetsis (however you spell is name) is the selfish one and i would expect him to make a comeback, since I think after Looker captures him, he escapes and you never find him (again I think). N was just brainwashed by him.
  • rainn'sgaydar - February 27, 2012 3:50 p.m.

But N captured the other legendary, right? And then went off to ponder things or something like that? What if he found Kyurem in his wanderings and the two forms fused? Makes for an intriguing story, I think. Which again brings me to the point that I'd be okay with them foregoing gym badges and the elite four with a sequel and just being more story based. They'd have to implement something else to keep you from just moving city to city I guess, or to at least make the cities worthwhile, but it could be interesting. In any case, just my two cents.
  • xarab4lyfex - February 28, 2012 4:17 p.m.

    I guess that makes sense
  • rainn'sgaydar - February 27, 2012 10:43 a.m.

Anyway, did anyone else notice that they have black kyurem with black version 2? That would further imply the legendary that N got in the respective version is fused with kyurem (since N got zekrom in black, reshiram in white), if those are fusions and not just forms.

Makes sense sense to advertise 'new' legendaries for these 'new' games. And I thought they were the same 5th gen. cretin until I was told otherwise. Now I know these are cretin 'version 2.'
  • robotdickens - February 26, 2012 5:11 p.m.

Can someone tell me what is different about this new game? It looks like they took the Black and White legendaries and mixed them with the third legendary in the game. I am a big Pokemon fan but I need some more details before I start laying down some cash for Pokemon Black/White 2.

Be patient, the games were just announced yesterday. They can't just tell us the entire plot of the new games the same day they announce it, it's bad marketing. Imagine how much worse games like Batman Arkham City and Bioshock would have been had we known every detail from the get go. It just ruins the experience to give out too much information to soon. Besides, if they were going the same games with minor changes, I don't believe Nintendo/Game Freak would have made them Black 2 and White 2, they would have made Gray. I expect these games to be direct sequels to Black and White, as the titles would suggest, picking up where the previous games left off. Could I be wrong? Sure, this could just be one huge cash grab by Nintendo. If that's the case I would be extremely disappointed, possibly to the point where I wouldn't buy the games, and I've bought every main series game ever made. But I trust Nintendo and Game Freak to deliver a great set of games. TL;DR: Just be patient, they were just announced. We'll get more info soon enough.

They finally ran out of colors...
  • shinyscizor93 - February 26, 2012 7:54 p.m.

They didn't run out of colors, they've only used five (Red, Blue, Yellow, Black, and White, the rest are gems and metals), there is still a whole color spectrum worth of colors they could use. When we get Pokemon Beige, then they will have run out of colors. They named them Black 2 and White 2 most likely because they wanted to do a continuation of the first serious story they've had in any of their games. Instead of immediately assuming they've run out of ideas be optimistic and realize that they could have millions of ideas waiting for us.
  • winner2 - February 26, 2012 1:50 p.m.

Almost feels like the entire game's success at getting attention has depended on the look of the legendary on the cover ever since the s/g/c versions came out.
  • SenorHurt - February 26, 2012 1:50 p.m.

"Pokemons" (in my best Bill Cosby voice)
  • codystovall - February 26, 2012 1:28 p.m.

I cannot hide the boner I have... Haters better step back, because Im about to turn left and I dont wanna slap you with my dick. Hopefully these sequels will have more to them than kyurems story but Ill play anyway because kyurem rulez.
  • shawksta - February 26, 2012 2:32 p.m.

I hope so too, as far as the series are concerned, Black and White has changed allot, and this is a huge suprise that instead of a third iteration, we get what seems to be sequels, im as excited as you are, this is gonna be awesome!
  • Limbo - February 26, 2012 6:49 p.m.

Was that a DBZ Abridged reference? :D But yeah, not getting this. I hardly ever get the "third" game in the generation. Waste of money in my opinion as I'm not a super dedicated Pokemon fan, and Black and White weren't exactly my cup of tea.
