The Phantom Pain announced, though it's likely just viral marketing for Metal Gear Solid

The Phantom Pain from Moby Dick Studio was announced at Spike's Video Game Awards tonight, and it's definitely... Something. Its cryptic debut trailer featured a man awakening in a hospital, his left forearm amputated and replaced with a prosthesis, confused and frightened by what's happening around him.

As the trailer progressed, things got weirder and weirder. The hospital filled with smoke and eventually caught fire, with men in tactical gear executing other patients. Things finally unhinged near the conclusion, with a fiery pegasus charging through the scene and then--why not?--a fiery whale.

Rumors are it might just be viral marketing for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes (because Kojima), but we don't know for sure. We'll let you know when we get more details on The Phantom Pain.

UPDATE: The evidence is mounting--the protagonist's distinct mullet, bandaged eye, some similar facial scarring, and a nightmarish appearance from Snake Eater's Colonel Volgin all make this look like a bad dream from the Big Boss.

It doesn't hurt that unknown developer Moby Dick Studio is allegedly led by one Joakim Mogren--Joakim being an anagram for Kojima. La-li-lu-le-lo...

Never played through an entire Metal Gear game, but I have to know what's going on here. I really want to play this.

Hmmm looking at that trailer again, when he's in the room at the start the Union Jack and map stick out quite prominently. Can't quite make out the area the map depicts but if this is viral marketing for Ground Zeroes maybe it highlights the globe spanning nature of the game and since it takes place in the 1970's perhaps the Union Jack highlights it's a British colony, perhaps in Africa somewhere?.......Zanzibar/Tanzania perhaps? Just spitballing a few ideas.

This is exactly what I thought a few moments into the trailer.

Damn, this is fucking awesome. I'm seriously hoping, if it's not a continuation of either Snake's stories, that it's got something to do with a Cobra Unit spin-off. In fact, I just want it to have something to do with Cobra Unit. One thing I don't get is that it looks very modern-day in terms of setting, whereas Ground Zeroes is set in, what, the seventies/early eighties? And if it's Metal Gear Solid V, rather than Ground Zeroes, does that mean we've got THREE Metal Gear ttles, including Rising, to look forward to!?

I'm not even sure that whatever the trailer is showing is gonna be in the actual game. I mean- it might be the first time they've tried to hide and announce it as an entirely different game, but it's NOT the first time that Kojima has out an outrageous amount of effort into a trailer or video that would never make it into the game anyway. (See: The hilarious reveal trailer for MGS4 in which snake and raiden fight it out to see who becomes the next protagonist)

That is a good point. Is that Metal Gear Raiden: Snake Eraser you're on about? Because that was a bloody brilliant trailer, although I didn't think it was actually a trailer for MGS4, but rather a light-hearted joke for the Subsistence version of Snake Eater. Still, no matter what it is, I want a game about Cobra Unit and their origins. It talks far too much about their involvement in WW2, and about The Joy' and The Sorrow's relationship and possibly being Ocelot's parents to just leave it there. If Konami don't logically deduce that's where they should go with the series, I'll frigging pitch it to them.

Remember the "This is no FPS, this is MGS" trailer from E3 way too many years ago?

Something i notice, Ground Zeroes trailer - "From FOX, Two PHANTOMS were born",

Oh Kojima! You scamp! Then again, that this was figured out not even hours after the announcement also means it could have been hidden better... Unless that is EXACTLY what Kojima wants to make us think >>

This is why I don't just like the MGS series or Kojima games I LOVE THEM. Stuff like this gets me so damn excited, for no good reason I guess, that my friends find m hard to be around, every time they announce a new Metal Gear. I have a disease and MGS is the cure. Plus when Armless shows his face his head wrap (which works as a bandana) is covering his right eye, like big boss and his has a beard like GZ Big Boss. But for as for this being a dream. Maybe this is the first reveal of the Boss Unit in the game., Supernaturalish things exist in the MGS universe. Nit-Pick: In Peace Walker Gustaves had a mechanical prosthesis hand/RPG. They couldn't pony up the cash to give the Legendary Soldier one too?

Nah, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with MGS. http://www.mobydickstudio.se/en

Just in case the sarcasm wasn't clear: http://i.imgur.com/h9SP7.jpg

Thanks for that. No Sarcasm. If this is anything like PW or Rising it will pay to keep an eye on that site.
