New Super Mario Bros. 2 goes for the gold

Nintendo zeroed in on a release date for New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS. The company announced the new Mario game will come out August 19 during its E3 press conference.

This time Mario takes a page from Wario’s book. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is all about the gold. We saw a few screens of Mario grabbing every coin he could get his hands on. And there were more coins than we have ever seen in a Mario game, gold coins practically erupted from stomped enemies. We also saw Mario tossing fireballs at gilded Piranha Plants and he even donned a golden costume as well.

But Nintendo didn’t share much beyond a few short clips of Mario going for the gold. Nintendo promised more Mario news during its DS only press conference on Wednesday. The presentation is at 6 p.m. PDT and can be viewed on Nintendo's E3 streaming site.

More travel-sized Mario sidescrolling is alright in my book. I'm glad the release isn't too far off.

Unless they add multiplayer to this, I'm not interested.

Although, I'm very curious why there's so much focus on coin collecting...

This game looks exactly like the Mario game that was previewed for the Wii U. Will they be fun? Yes... but that game by no means blew minds. Come on Nintendo show a mind-blowing 3D Zelda or Mario, not a 2D sidescroller that could be on any console.
