New Borderlands videos!

We recently got some hands-on time with Borderlands, the hybrid shooter/RPG due out later this month. We played a massively power-leveled Lilith character in two of the game’s later areas: Old Haven and The Crimson Enclave. Old Haven is a ramshackle city setting, while the Crimson Enclave is the high-elevation fortress of the Crimson Lance. While the new areas stick to Borderlands’ muted color palette, they do change things up slightly from what we’ve seen previously.

Above: The peaceful streets of Old Haven

As you saw in the video above, Crimson Lance soldiers are heavily armored and carry big, bulky weapons. They’re Borderlands’ Brotherhood of Steel, essentially. We saw a couple of them carrying riot shields, which made them effectively bulletproof from the front. Lilith’s Phasewalk ability was especially useful for getting around behind them.

Lucky for us, all the level grinding was done ahead of time so our Lilith was up to level 35 and was decked out with top-shelf weaponry. Now watch as she makes short work of a Crimson Lance patrol and assaults a stronghold.

I'm so stuck on whether I should get this or Dragon Age! They both look so good and I should probably only get one. I'll prolly get DA:O since you get extra stuff from the pre-order, but as soon as I get the money im def gettin Borderlands.

I keep seeing the phrase"RPG/Shooter hybrid" in relation to Borderlands but, honestly, all I've seen is shooter, shooter, a little gun customisation and some, erm, shooting. Fallout3 was roured in a similar wayled compleely to be anything other than a good RPG withtwo h1t chooting systems and Borderlands looks too far the other way to be called anything like an RPG from all I've seen. Gun customisation and a little levelling up doesn't make an RPG and I'm coubting that theooting will stand up to the likes of MW1 or 2, KZ2 or Halo myself. I like the artstyle but I need to see there's a lot more meat on the bones of what looks like some pre normal shooting if they want my money.

Who cares about little things like the screaming of soldiers dying as you burn them alive with incendiary ammo? Oh wait, I do! And I revel in it, I dunno why you guys are complaining about it. Music to my ears.

I just remembered how scary I find new shooters... BUT I STILL WANT THIS GAME
  • dunc12 - October 11, 2009 7:29 a.m.

  • KHfan - October 10, 2009 8:16 p.m.

this game will be mad, can you go into 3rd person like in fallout 3 in wonder?
  • TheWebSwinger - October 10, 2009 3:44 a.m.

I'm still a bit iffy on this one, but if the reviews hold up, it's a sure buy for me.
  • TestDDs - October 9, 2009 9:48 p.m.

@heavytank wow you're such a gullible bastard. How bought you go buy MW2 with that whore money of yours.
  • CountFenring - October 9, 2009 4:10 p.m.

We got footage of the aliens! YAY!
  • HeavyTank - October 9, 2009 1:10 p.m.

Those assholes will release it on the US in the 23rd but an antire week later in Europe! Why do they make us wait so long? Also, tesDD's, check your facts before saying stupid things you idiot. The game takes place in a derelict planet full of mercs, pervs, wild animals and soldiers. Also, people, don't buy MW2!Activision made it more expensive for no damn reason! And this game will be much better anyway.

Graphics are different from the crop out there and that in itself makes it worth checking out. However, the gameplay doesn't thrill me as much. I am interested enough to check out the reviews before purchasing the game but I'm not pre-ordering it.

Is it just me or did anyone else find it weird that the enemy only screamed AFTER they were dead?
  • Spybreak8 - October 9, 2009 4:12 a.m.

Awesome but whats with the same dying sounds, wtf!? Is it because the weapons use flame damage or something? After seeing the youtube videos I decided I'd play as Lilith as well, magic powers and guns ftw.
  • Useoam - October 9, 2009 12:52 a.m.

I cNan not wait for the 20th!!!!! this looks totally BA. I know what I'll be saving up my money for!
  • TestDDs - October 9, 2009 12:47 a.m.

Let me guess the game takes place on the US and Mexico border. This game is teaching people new ways to hop the border into other countries.
  • Tymiegie - October 9, 2009 12:44 a.m.

I so want this game!!!!!! Too bad I probably won't be able to scrounge up the case until around christmas time since I decided to pre-order Dragon Age. It will be good and all (Bioware game), but this game looks so awesome... Well that settles it. Dragon Age will be my beloved dialouge-heavy game where I beat the shit out of people and Borderlands will be my twitchy shooting fun. I well find a way to get both of them day one. Somehow.... Oh and did anyone actually see a grenade kill anyone in the videos?
  • moredhel_1 - October 9, 2009 12:26 a.m.

I seriously cannot wait to play this game. Damn, this looks awesome! I agree, I think the art style is fantastic, and much improved from the "Generi-brown" colored "just another shooter with guns" approach before. Although, am I the only one, or did the death sounds in these videos sound extremely annoying, and bordering on the "I'm turning into the Lizard now!" MMMRRRAARRRGGHH! yell from the podcasts?
  • skynetiscoming - October 8, 2009 11:04 p.m.

I can't stand those people who say this game looks ugly! Its beutiful.
  • RedBandit - October 8, 2009 10:32 p.m.

This is one of the few games I'm looking forward to, nice video, nice article.
