Mystery artwork prompts Final Fantasy XIII sequel speculation

Is a Final Fantasy XIII-2 on the way? That's the latest scuttlebutt after a cryptic piece of artwork is being sent out to loyal Square Enix fans in Japan.

The publisher is giving away exclusive pictures of FFXIII protagonist Lightning to Japanese gamers who have achieved "ultimate" status on their Square Enix online accounts. They're hand-signed by character designer Tetsuya Nomura, who also added another little note on each piece. "She must not be forgotten."

Given that Square Enix is always so mysterious in its hype and messages, combined with the fact that the gaming community likes to over-analyze everything under the sun, some die-hard fans are wondering if there's a hidden meaning behind that five-word etching.

If Lightning must not be forgotten, surely she will live on in a future Square Enix game. That's the emerging logic, at least. It has been confirmed she will not be in the spinoff game Final Fantasy Versus XIII, though she will make an appearance in the upcoming PSP fighting game Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy.

Of course, we can look back at all the great Final Fantasy characters of the past. We never forgot them, but that doesn't mean they ever got to star in their own sequel. Square Enix has also said that Final Fantasy XIII will be the last "traditional" Final Fantasy RPG, so maybe the message is a tribute to that.

In the end, who knows? It's Square Enix. We stopped trying to make sense out of what comes out of that company a long time ago.

Screw the haters, FFXIII was awesome and I would love a sequel. Just flesh out the characters a bit more and let us have full control over what party members we use early on. FFXIII's teriffic battle system didnt work as well with only two party members, and that was all that was wrong with the first half of the game. Linearity was not a bad thing, nor was it new to FF games.

i get the feeling that they arent talking about lighting if it is a promt for a sequel game...maybe someone she knew but not her...there really wasnt a story to her 'cept for sarah and well...thats been solved. they would have to give her a whole new piece of background and lets face it they dont want to do that... that said idk what its about...gimme my damn sequel...now...

I'd prefer they finish the XIII games they're already working on, and then give me KINGDOM FUCKING HEARTS III!!!!!!!!

They did express that they wanted to create a sequel... Hopefully they can take our feedback and produce a darn good sequel.

@Paganpoet, I didn't think I'd ever see anyone who felt the same about X-2 as I did. I would love to see a sequel. The game was actually good, the fact that people would name it their worst game of the year means that they haven't played any of the actually bad games that came out this year. What I'll be worried about is if Fang and Vanille will be in the game or not. Linearity, I couldn't care less about. I played X, and it was just as linear, if not more so than XIII.

If I have to play for 30+ hours before the real game starts, then you can consider your sweet ass SOL Lightning. Honestly though, I haven't played FFXIII yet so I really can't say if this is good news or not. Still, I did hear good things about some parts of FFXIII, so maybe it's worth a try.

FUCK YEAH, maybe they'll get it right this time

No, she must be forgotten. Please. She and the entirety of that game. Also, "last traditional Final Fantasy"? Good. Leave Final Fantasy alone, Square. You've run it into the ground with a big enough drill already.

God, I hope there's a sequel. Just don't have Lightning become a pop star, plz. We don't want to go the X-2 route here. but new chars would be nice..

@RayneShock, all of Tetsuya Nomura's characters look like each other. See also Tifa/Rinoa/Garnet/Yuna

First thing I thought of was Lightning talking about Serah, but I'd be overly happy to have a FFXIII-2 ^^ And is it me or does she look a little Aya Brea-ish?
  • Cyberninja - December 16, 2010 10:22 p.m.

what about the other 13 spinoff for psp she could be in that and it may show backstory from before when 13 takes place or at least a side quest in it.
  • paganpoet - December 16, 2010 10:04 p.m.

Well the ending was left very open-ended in the same way FFX's ending was, so I guess it makes sense if there was a direct sequel. I would look forward to it. I mean, the haters, they gonna hate, but FFX-2 was damn fun. Even better than FFX in my opinion even if the Koda Kumi/Sweetbox songs were a little cringeworthy.
  • NappyAfro - December 16, 2010 9:57 p.m.

Speculation started a while back when it was said that there wouldn't be any DLC for the game as planned by the director wouldn't mind doing a complete sequel instead... I hope it doesn't come into fruition.
