Metal Gear Solid V details cleared up by Kojima

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain had one of the strangest reveals in recent triple-A gaming history, so naturally we had some questions even after its trailer concluded. Fortunately, series creator Hideo Kojima cleared up several points in an interview with GameTrailers.

First off, the game is indeed coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3--Kojima refused to comment on any next-gen console support, but we'll see some form of The Phantom Pain on existing consoles.

Also, how do Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain fit together? They're not just two names for the same thing, but they are still kind of, uh... Take it away, Kojima:

“We can’t comment just yet on how these things will be distributed and sold," he said--though Gematsu was told they are both the "same" game. "But what we can say is that Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes will be two parts of a whole, and Ground Zeroes will come first. It will kind of be Phantom Pain on a smaller scale. It will be open-world, but not quite as big as Phantom Pain. It will allow you to jump in, learn how to sneak real-time in that open-world, and later on, after [players] kind of get used to that, then Phantom Pain will come along and they’ll be thrown into this huge, gigantic open word. It’s a two-step process, the game design, and together these things will comprise Metal Gear Solid V.”

Finally, Kojima said he wants this to be his last Metal Gear game (we've heard that before). But before he lets his staff at Kojima Productions take over, he wanted to reinvent the series and make it a contender against Western action games--V instead of 5, as in Victory. That reinvention includes recasting Snake's voice actor.

If--like us--you still feel clueless about this whole thing even after reading our 12 things you need to know about MGSV, just pretend you're playing a Metal Gear Solid game right now.

Of course! It was nanomachines the whole time...

What a joke and I'm sure fans will just eat it all up. That's just how gamers are this day in age. So effectively they are taking one game and breaking it up. So they give you an Introductory game to try and introduce *cough dumbass excuse) to the games mechanics and give you a taste of it's plot. Then they will sell you the final part of the game . Hideo Kojima wants to empty his fans pockets and make mad dollars before he ends the MGS Title. At least he is starting to think like Western Publishers. "Take as much as you can from your fans, because they'll buy it up out of stupidity."

So much was going on in that trailer. FLAMING FLYING HORSE!? A BURNING WHALE!? MAN ON FIRE ON BURNING HORSE!? i guess you can say it has been "reinvented". And no David Hayter .... sad indeed.

Ground Zeroes (GZ) is going to be a digitally distributed ("pre-DLC" if you will), probably cost $30 to $40, with the Phantom Pain (PP) costing $60 and be both digital and physically distributing. It's a great sales technique. Rather than have people pay for one game for $60, you'll pay $80 for essentially the same game. Those who plan to buy PP, no matter what, will this huge amount for what is essentially one game. Those with their doubts will buy GZ and make up their mind, but by then Konami will have your $20 to $30. Wave of the future for game sales and distribution. Kind of sucks that one game is being cut up into two to make more money. That Kojimi, what an "artist."

I'm scared with the direction this series is taking. Kojima should have ended this years ago... Metal Gear is turning into a joke. And I'm not saying this because of MG Rising, or the batshit craziness of the Phantom Pain trailer.

As a huge MGS game I'm shamefully only now playing Peace Walker for the first time. I'd love some of the stuff from this to carry over to 5 like the RPG elements, side missions and base-building but with full sized CQC and combat variety like MGS4 and now with this new Fox Engine. This should be amazing!

So, Ground Zeroes is MGSV single player, and Phantom Pain is an MMO? Lots of games seem to be taking the single-player-is-the-multiplayer-tutorial route these days.

I think its more like Ground Zeroes is the 'Tanker Mission' of MGSV and Phantom Pain is the rest of the game.

judging from the latest phantom pain video, it appears to me at least that ground zeroes is a smaller game with solid snake, who gets injured at some point, perhaps even killed. and the phantom pain will be the fallout/conclusion. note the part in the phantom pain with the guy on the gurney, next to snake from ground zeroes, the camera seems to be from the advantage point of a third person. When told that snake is in a coma, the mysterious other guy then asks about the 'camera' characters condition, "What about him?". So Snake is in a coma, perhaps you're another character, who knows. Looks insane either way, and Xbox 360! Yay!

    Big Boss, not Solid Snake.

So he's saying that the cutscenes will be so long he had to break up the game into two parts

Recasting Snakes voice could be a very silly idea, David Hayter is snake. Im sure Kojima knows what he is talking about and doing. I hope the fact he was running it on PC and using a 360 controller was a swipe at Microsoft and its PS exclusive. Metal Gear belongs on the Playstation.
  • Bansheebot - March 31, 2013 8:41 p.m.

I like Hayter as Solid Snake, but I don't see his voice fitting the aging Big Boss. Besides, the characters need to diverge at some point. Solid Snake is a clone of Big Boss, but as people, they couldn't be more different.
  • metalgatesolid - April 6, 2013 7:26 a.m.

Thing is a metal Gear game without Hayter is a very sad thought.

The trailer looked ridiculous, and not in a good way. It had too many fantasy elements to even be tangentially related to the actual Metal Gear Solid series. If Kojima is trying to pull off a DMC-style reboot he should just say so and not try to sucker people into thinking this is a traditional MGS game. Also, Ground Zeroes will be Phantom Pain "on a smaller scale." Does that mean it's a Vita game?
  • alex-roy-bristol - March 30, 2013 6:42 p.m.

I don't know, we only saw about 2-3 incredibly "fantasy"-like scenes, so, for all we know, this could just like the Cobra Unit from MGS3. I mean, it's probably going to be a longer game than the previous ones, (I sure as hell hope it's not the shortest...), so more game time = more crazy moments... Just a thought though, it could be a MGS2-style twist...
  • sternparez - March 31, 2013 6:24 a.m.

Remember all the fantasy stuff could be an hallucination
  • GamesRadarCollanderCooper - March 31, 2013 12:04 p.m.

That would be most the hopeful estimation but I fear that Kojima is on a flight of fancy with this game
  • CrashmanX - March 31, 2013 9:15 a.m.

    MGS Realism .....NANOMACHINES!
  • sternparez - March 31, 2013 12:39 p.m.

Haha yeh I hope they give the whole nanomachines thing a rest after 4.
