Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain E3 trailer amazes

Open-world, desert shenanigans and vehicles aplenty

Metal Gear Solid 5has been revealed as anXbox Onetitle, by way of a lengthy gameplay trailer at Microsoft's E3 2013 press conference. The visually impressive, highly cinematic trailer, set in a gorgeously detailed open-world Afganistan and featuring another Bond-style theme song, looks to be a radical departure for the series.

Promising real-time weather, a persistent day/night cycle, "unparalleled strategic freedom" and a whole load of vehicles Metal Gear Solid 5 looks like a genuine new start for the series, appearing to play like a blend of the close stealth the series is known for and the kind of long-range, tactical navigation seen in the Far Cry series.

Long-time GR+ writer Dave has been gaming with immense dedication ever since he failed dismally at some '80s arcade racer on a childhood day at the seaside (due to being too small to reach the controls without help). These days he's an enigmatic blend of beard-stroking narrative discussion and hard-hitting Psycho Crushers.
