Man gets 40 years for robbing GameStop stores

A 29-year-old Louisiana man will spend the next 40 years of his life behind bars because he apparently really, really wanted some video games. Prosecutors say he stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from GameStop, or, if he had traded it all back in to GameStop, around $65.

Gregory Reaux (right) was found guilty for three counts of armed robbery and one count of attempted armed robbery, all of which were committed at New Orleans-area GameStop locations. The judge sentenced him to 10 years for each offense, the minimum allowed by Louisiana law. So really, if this dude was smart he would have just taken a huge payload at one heist and sailed through with a measly 10-year sentence.

Above: Don't worry, no clueless moms were harmed during the GameStop robberies

The weapon in question for these "armed robbery" convictions was a box cutter. Reaux reportedly also wore a hat, a black backpack, and a t-shirt over his face as a mask when he stormed into the stores.

To add another wrinkle, apparently Reaux used to work at the unholy video game chain himself. He was an employee at a local store for two years, but was fired after he "improperly" used his employee discount. So there was an unscrupulous guy working for GameStop? Yeah, we can't pretend to be surprised either.

Above: This may or may not be an accurate representation of what Reaux's getaway vehicle looked like

There is one more thing - it appears police are still investigating up to five more robberies that Reaux may have committed and may still press further charges against him. In other words, don't expect to see this guy to RSVP to any of your Mardi Gras invitations any time… ever.

Crime doesn’t pay, kids!

this guy deserves 40 years. if he hacked his shit he could just go to piratebay
  • tankman232 - August 21, 2010 4:25 p.m.

when i saw his pic, i immediately thought of big smoke. 40 years is just a good stab at the video game industry. how is it racist when its usually true?
  • GameManiac - August 20, 2010 4:52 p.m.

Damn right crime doesn't pay. It's hard as hell to do so nowadays anyway, with all the fingerprint analysis, surveillance cameras, security systems, etc. I loved the getaway pic. It adds good comedy to a serious situation.

"I remember someone tried stealing from my store during the Halo 3 launch party, and I speared him through the front display of Master Chief. One of my shining moments, if I do say so myself." SERIOUSLY? I bet, after the shock and panic, that was hilarious. Hell, I'm practically crying with laughter just trying to imagine that. Fucking hilarious. Oh, please PM me to tell me that someone made a really good wisecrack about the event just after, that would make my week.

he should have just downloaded those games... that dosent require armed assault or anything, and can be done from the saftey of your own home!

totally disagree with anyone who says that this is OTT: 1) 10 years is minimum for armed robbery in Louisiana...i doubt this is a little-known fact. The guy CHOSE to commit the crime 4 times and is therefore deserving of the sentence 2) you can't say it's too much and then compare it to UK sentences, and then complain about how people get off far to easily over here as well... Instead treat this as an example - maybe if sentences were as harsh over here it would deter more people from commiting the crimes in the first place. 3) Also, let's not kid ourselves - if we could have these kind of sentences in the UK, we would. The only reason we don't is that we are a far more crowded population than the states, and have limited prison space. The fact is that the only reason sentences are so light over here is because we can't actually lock everyone up that should be locked up at the same time, so over the past 20 years sentences have slowly been reduced and reduced as a way of managing prison-crowding. Capst3r - i agree it's shameful, but not because of how severe a sentence the guy got, but rather because this highlights the absolute farce that is the british justice system in terms of sentencing and enforcement.

Jesus 40 years? I mean yea stealing is wrong and all that moral stuff but thats practically an instant game over for the man. Because he wanted some discs.

As a fellow Louisianian and an aficionado of karma, I say "Ha! Ha!"
  • stevengibson - August 18, 2010 12:43 a.m.

so the next time an asshole curses at me on on xbox live i can find him kill em n get 20 years...but if i steal the games from his house ill get 60?? damn louisiana come on
  • sleepy92ismypsn - August 18, 2010 12:20 a.m.

Damn 40 years for that. It's because he's black. Fuck Gamestop.
  • JADENkOTOR - August 17, 2010 11:44 p.m.

A box cutter is as dangerous as a gun... That is for sure the dumbest thing I have heard or read today. As for this dude getting 40 years, that is pretty fucking ridiculous. Non-violent crimes cannot be this severe as its not morally right or economically smart. Our prison system is so overflowing with inmates that people cannot be put in this long for something as stupid as petty theft (thats what this is, not armed robbery)... stupid stupid shit.
  • Crabhand - August 17, 2010 11:37 p.m.

Seems a little excessive, but I'm sure the sentence will get reduced or something.
  • BazyLastard - August 17, 2010 11:33 p.m.

I agree here, armed robbery is a serious crime, but, but 40 years reflects poorly on the state of LA to put it mildly. Why not just cut off his hands while they're at it? And he got the *minimum* under state law. Someone should put together a list of way more serious crimes that got less than 40 years. Come on GR, there's a nice follow-up article idea for you...
  • WillisTron - August 17, 2010 11:07 p.m.

Yes, criminals should be punished, but really 40 years? That's his whole life right there, that accomplishes nothing. If a rapist or murderer is locked up for life or put to death, that's fine by me. By stealing video games? I think 20 years in federal prison will be more than enough a lesson to him
  • Hayseyboy - August 17, 2010 11 p.m.

    That's a bit harsh
  • VaneTrago - August 17, 2010 10:01 p.m.

A box cutter is more dangerous than a gun? Possibly... But I guaran-fucking-tee that ANYONE who wears a T-Shirt as their mask, is not going to be deadly proficient with it. I don't even know how in the hell he got away. It must have been early in the morning, when only one employee was there, and it was either a female or the resident WoW dweeb. I remember someone tried stealing from my store during the Halo 3 launch party, and I speared him through the front display of Master Chief. One of my shining moments, if I do say so myself. 40 years is some bullshit.
  • keefster - August 17, 2010 9:47 p.m.

Thats a ridiculously long sentence, murderers don't get put in for that long. That judge was either really harsh, a big video game fan, or rascist. A crime is a crime, but 40 years for robbery seems excessive.
  • thatblindgamer - August 17, 2010 9:40 p.m.

"Prosecutors say he stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from GameStop, or, if he had traded it all back in to GameStop, around $65." Best part of the whole article. And apparently, due to the amount of time he will serve, stealing video games is worse than murder. I realize that games are going up in value, but really?
  • BlindMarksman - August 17, 2010 9:22 p.m.

    He´s black. LOL STREROTYPES!
  • Helios - August 17, 2010 9:14 p.m.

I say the guy deserves it. But what is with that first picture (the one with all the females)? I wish my local GameStops were more like that. In my hometown, about ninety percent of the people in them are male, and not a single one has that many PC games.
