Lost, Final Fantasy and more: Eight Just Cause 2 Easter eggs

Sandbox games like Just Cause, GTA and Saints Row tend to have one big thing in common, Easter eggs. Huge, open landscapes encourage exploration, and devs are always cramming secrets, references and loot into every obscure corner of the map. Thing is, a lot of this stuff takes ages to find; scouring every last inch of the world map can’t be rushed, and it’s no surprise to see new Easter eggs in games that are years old.

Above: "Boom goes the dynamite"

Just Cause 2’s certainly filled to the brim with stuff as well; the game’s only been out for a week, and there are already a large number of videos on the net documenting the game’s hidden doodads. We’ve assembled a small list of the best ones so far:

"Shark"

Location: X-12665 Y-22595

Swimming around the water near the location you'll find a large shark fin patrolling the area. Closer examination will reveal it's just a little motor with a big metal fin. Insert obligatory Games Radar Jaws Unleashed reference here.

Bubble Blaster

Location: X-4245 Y-25978

At these coordinates you'll find a tower in the middle of some cherry blossom trees. Use your grappling hook to get up into the tower and you'll find the Happy Bubble Blaster weapon on the table. While the gun’s stream of little bubbles doesn’t do any damage, it still pisses the guards off something fierce when you shoot them. Talk about no sense of humor!

Banana Fail

Location: X-21902 Y-20264

This one’s a little simpler, just a bunch of bananas spelling out "BANANA FAIL" in the middle of some random jungle. Obligatory “Peanut butter jelly time” reference goes here.

I Am Legend

Location: X-18207 Y-21543

At the above coordinates there’s a table and chair at the end of a dock, a reference to the scene in I Am Legend where Will Smith is waiting for survivors to arrive.

Mt. Rushmore

Location: X-30375 Y-30637

This one’s a little hard to miss, but we figured it was cool enough to mention; there’s a huge rock sculpture similar to Mount Rushmore at this location and it sports the ubiquitous face of evil dictator “Baby” Panay.

LOST Hatch

Location: X-1769 Y-4351

Definitely the most popular of the Easter eggs, this secret involves a bunch of references to the show LOST, including the mysterious hatch, planes automatically crashing over the island, and noises mighty similar to those of the show’s mysterious smoke monster.

Final Fantasy-esque Airship

Location: X-29584 Y-11435

While it’s not literally an Easter egg (there’s an in-game mission that requires you to go here), the Mile High Club is pretty awesome. A floating dance club blasting house music into the clouds sounds like a fantastic party. Making it even cooler is the airship’s strong design resemblance to Final Fantasy’s favored mode of transportation.

Beached Whale

Location: X-29603 Y-31351

At the bottom right of the map on the Selatan Archipelago you’ll find an enormous beached whale on the shore. But it’s not just eye candy, blowing the whale up with the timed explosive will reveal an armor upgrade in the belly of the whale. This is most likely a reference to the classic news video of a beached whale being blown up with explosives.

Congrats, GR, on the "Boom goes the dynamite" reference. Took me a second to realise where I recognised it from... reCaptcha: dustry dammed

I love Easter Eggs, I knew this game was pretty fun and this makes me want to run out the store and buy it...

Q: Why did they put all those Easter eggs in there? A: Just 'Cause they wanted... 2. :-p This game is full of Easter egg WIN. And Spydle4x4, I think it falls into the "so bad it's good" category. The devs probably realized that they were going to be focusing on "boom goes the dynamite" and not "mmm goes the dialogue". That's my story, anyway. ReCaptcha: Deccan deficiencies

No9: Beating the developer's BASE jumping record (an unspecified amount) will net you an in-game message from said developers. Theis can be easily done by finding the hot-air balloon (another egg) and leaping from the top after flying as high as you can be bothered to go. The game throws you out after about 6500m. My personal record is slightly below this.

There is also on the top right sort of in there on the lost island a Guy that has smoke coming out of him and follows you around
