recently sat down with Justin Timberlake to chat about his upcoming sci-fi thriller
The erstwhile *NSYNC warbler has gradually been building a name for himself as an accomplished thesp, with his turn as Napster founder Sean Parker in The Social Network scoring him new levels of actorly credibility.
As well as having raunch-com Friends With Benefits looking to sew up the date market, Timberlake is making the leap into action and sci-fi with In Time , the latest high-concepter from Gattaca ’s Andrew Niccol.
When we asked JT about the appeal of In Time , he told us, “I think Andrew has an ability to use his films to make us look in the mirror. He does it in such a smart way.
“[ There’s the story of ] the anti-hero who, in turn, is forced to become a hero, but the bigger picture is the society that’s been split in two halves. There is no middle class – there’s the rich who can live forever and the poor who die young, so I think it’s of the zeitgeist.”
That’s not to say the cerebral thriller, which imagines a future in which the aging gene is switched of when you hit 25 and extra time is the most valuable currency, will be boring, with Timberlake adding, “In the midst of all those ideas, Andrew’s created a real thrill ride.”
So, did he enjoy the transition into action star? “I’ve never done a film like this so I was excited to jump into those running shoes- I run a lot in this movie.
“It’s very intimate and performance driven, but it was fun to drive cars really fast and shoot guns and not get arrested for it!”
In Time opens 1 November 2011.
