Is this what Xbox's realistic avatars will look like?

Xbox Live's player avatars are going to get a realistic makeover because people are having trouble using them with Kinect. Turns out the big-headed, stumpy-torsoed virtual people are screwing up regular-shaped people's hand/eye co-ordination. 'No problem', said Rare according to an interview with OXM - 'we'll create more realistically-shaped avatars, then everything will be fine'. Well, it would be, but avatars were cuteified for a reason. I much prefer the cartoony, exaggerated version of myself than the dull, realistic (now deleted) version in PlayStation Home. Besides, look at what happens when you realify an Xbox Avatar...

My online Avatar is a close as I could get it to looking like my real self. I'm actually quite fond of him. Mini-me plays a virtual guitar, wears ear-rings and gothy T-shirts, and has been known to sport a Left 4 Dead 2 health pack because we succeeded at that game. Here we are, side by side. I wasn't sure you'd be able to tell which was which, so I've captioned them for you:

Just to demonstrate how 'super-deformed' current avatars are, I've changed my real proportions to look like my avatar. This is why people can't relate to their on-screen self - they're having to imagine their body looks like this:

It's a little strange-looking, I'm sure you'll agree. So, as Rare said, the answer is to change the avatars' proportions to closer resemble real people's limbs. Are you ready for this? Don't say I didn't warn you - it's scary as hell.

Don't worry, he only waits under your bed and watches you sleep. Bear in mind, this is only an artist's impression of what Xbox avatars 2.0 might look like, but you can see why they didn't take this route the first time. Ugh. Just look at it. I know what you're thinking - that's one heck of a long neck. Well, maybe I was standing up straight for the photo, but as you can see, that's only like the real me. And you know what they say - long neck...

...scary avatar.

Upon downloading the new update I thought back to this article. It appears your worst fears have came true... I suggest treating this like you would any other normal apocalypse and gather loads of ammunition and dried foods... And don't trust your neighbors because odds are they are REALLY creepy avatars who have murdered their "real" selves and will stab you with a sharpened Nyko cooling fan blade that was once used for an X-box 360.

That is creppy as hell, I can't unsee it

In my opinon, who really gives a fuck about what their avatar looks like onscreen? I like unrealistic and cartoony. Realism sucks, that's why I like games. I'm not escaping reality if games and relevant gaming technology strive to mimic it perfectly.

Actually, I'm pretty much on par with the proportions of the avatar you. I'm lanky, and I have a pretty long neck. It looks normal to me.

Avatars are the single most pointless addition to the xbox live experience since the new dashboard was installed. It is simply another way to get us to spend more money. Anyone noticed that the supply of free avatar sh*t has run dry. Thats because idiots like me forked out for bloody lightsabres which add zero to the whole sorry business......god i miss public domain!!!

They'll be the same style as the characters in Kinect Adventures which is also shipping out with Kinect.
  • sheepy94 - August 20, 2010 3:26 p.m.

Wow that's exactly what my avatar looks like, same hair, same clothes, even the same shoes! Come to think about it, I actually look just like Justin. I think you may have just found your döppelganger (minus the face fur)... creepy
  • Hayseyboy - August 20, 2010 1:35 p.m.

NO! this means that my avatar will no longer be a little podgey fella dressed up to look like the mascot from Monday Night Combat, instead he will look like a guy named Ken doing anything for money so he can pay his electric bill to his crappy, 1 bedroom apartment. OH THE SHAME!

I didnt like the Xbox avatars when they first appeared because I thought they looked a bit too much like the Wii's avatars (which I crticised for being a console for babies at the time) but now I appreciate them more now that you've shown me how awful more realistic avatars look like. Scary...

Wow lol that is very creepy indeed, I honestly wouldn't be bothered if they changed the avatar just for kinect specific games and only in game... I don't want a row of my friends lookin like that on my dashboard however! I would be scared to boot up my 360 :(
  • Thorpe - August 20, 2010 11:47 a.m.

They look cuter with the bigger heads.
  • Ampatent - August 20, 2010 11:33 a.m.

As much as it doesn't matter, I'd prefer the normal avatars. At least I'm used to those.
