id Software says no to “a crappy Wii version of Rage on the Wii”

Shares

While there are plenty of examples of games, like Modern Warfare 3, ready to jump the console gap, take a slight graphical hit, and make a little extra cash with a release on the Nintendo Wii, id Software has drawn a line in the sand it will not cross - so pick your side.

When asked about the possibility of Rage showing up on the Nintendo Wii after the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions arrive in October, id Software’s co-owner and president Todd Hollenshead let loose with this gem of a comment: “We're not doing a crappy version of Rage on the Wii.”

Above: This character's eye patch was the result of a tragic Wii Remote wrist strap slip up

It's almost like just being asked made him angry. Hollenshead continued, “If you play the PC, the PS3, the 360 version, you get all of it. All the media's the same. We didn't make the crippled version that somebody wishes they had some other platform to play on." Awesome. Everybody who plays Rage will get the full post-apocalyptic experience (all 22 GB of it), but for now, we'll have to defer our dream of a fuzzy Rage with extra wiggles.

While I understand the view of Wii-sympathizers here, it is fortunate that they aren't going to dilute their efforts by forcing a sub-standard port. The best Wii games are, for the most part, Wii exclusives, not inferior versions of existing titles. Rage for Wii would serve no purpose than to shoehorn a million things into the system that it, quite frankly, isn't built for. It is important, however, for developers who are interested in the Wii to come up with a shooter that can compete with id's impending masterpiece. It's not an impossible task but one fact must be faced. The Wii's technology was dated on release. Now it will only continue to be left further behind as time goes on.

Even though I'm a fan of both the Wii and Nintendo I can see what Hollenshead means. I game as complex as Rage would probably DESTROY a Wii trying to run it.

Uh, did anyone even expect a wii version anyway? I mean, really?

Interesting. GR's preview suggests that the PS3 version is poor in comparison to the other two so which is it?

Why would anyone would like to play Rage on a white gamecube? Oh right so you can wiggle the remote to throw that boomerang thing. Congrats id software for having principles.

I think they should release just a sliver of it at full whack on the wii. Just so we culd watch the poor little boxes go into meltdown trying to play it.

I'm quite appalled at the amount of people thinking that id is the shit for not doing a wii version. If they were to port it over, it would suck due to their half-assed approach. However, if they were to make a game for the wii with the patience which they seem to sorely lack, rather than just port it, you'd find the results suprisingly positive

ya id..whatever...its a console port, so for us pc gamers this is an insult..if you think imma spend 60 bucks on a console port fuck off....i was hoping for rage ot be 50 gb and some next gen shit on pc, but nooooooooo, you have to lower ur standards to console...so its deus ex and swtor for me while i pirate the shit out of rage and skyrim...two of the most overhyped games this gen...specially skyrim, i probably wont even like it just like i didnt like any of the previous elder scrolls

id software is SO MUCH WIN! db1331 is making me all snooty so please forgive me, but I believe I do the same on SSFIV, by beating an opponent twice, due to their desire for a rematch, and then cripple their ego by beating them the third time with DAN, especially if they used Dan during one of the past fights.

I don't have a PS3, 360 or PC, but I'm not a fan of shooters to begin with, so I'm not missing out. I'm glad the developers aren't putting in on the Wii, but seeing as they aren't Activision to begin with, it makes sense that they would bother wasting money on porting it to that. @jackthemenace Not all Wii shooters are crap...the Metroid Prime series worked alright on it ( even though they were more about adventuring). It all comes down to whether or not the developer is willing to work with the system, and that's what Retro Studios set out to do.

LOL So true. @AuthorityFigure No there saying the Wii is so shitty it would make there game look bad and why would they going to put extra effort to try and make it equal to the Ps3/360 versions when the Wii doesn't have the graphics/controls to do it.
  • EwoksTasteLikeChicken - August 9, 2011 1:27 a.m.

One of my friends said the same thing about Black Ops on the Wii. That's pretty much the biggest casual gamer, playing a casual game on a casual console. Kudos to id though, if I were a developer, I wouldn't want to release a crippled version of one of my games.
  • AuthorityFigure - August 9, 2011 1:24 a.m.

No one's asking for a crappy version - they could provide a good version, or are they admitting that Treyarch have the talent and they don't?
  • D0CCON - August 9, 2011 1:07 a.m.

Well that was brutally honest. Sucks to be Wii.
