Grand Theft Auto V early mission details

Raiding a government skyscraper with your choice of three felon fellows

We've seen many screens for GTA 5 and have gotten some broader details so far, but haven't heard much about actually playing the game. That little wrinkle is getting ironed out, as IGN took a first look at some narrative and how the game's vaunted three-protagonist approach will impact story missions.

An early mission in GTA V will see the trio raid a downtown Los Santos high-rise to rescue a man held captive by a government agency. Players start off as skilled pilot Trevor, who navigates to the point where ex-mobster Michael can rappel down the side of the building.

From there, the mission opens up. Players can stick with Michael as he raids the offices, or transition over to Franklin, who covers him from another building with a sniper rifle--or do a little bit of both.

After Michael nabs the hostage, he and Trevor escape in the chopper where, again, players can choose how they want to pull off the heist: control Trevor's aerial acrobatics, or take over Franklin or Michael as they pick off pursuing helicopters from their unique vantages.

The setup is begging for co-operative hijinks, but Rockstar has kept mum on multiplayer other than saying the whole campaign will not be playable as such. Still, it's tough to imagine this mission and many of the other big operations could fail to allow some form of co-operative play--and, we say with quickening breath, a fully featured sandbox mode.

IGN's preview also gave a little more background on the characters themselves: Michael is on witness protection and lives in a ritzy Rockford Hills estate with his dysfunctional family, Franklin is a repo man for a luxury car dealer, and Trevor is an unstable career criminal who lives in a squalid trailer outside the city. Switching between the three briefly zooms the map out to a bird's eye view of Los Santos, before focusing back in on the selected ne'er-do-well.

IGN also revealed two new screenshots, one of which shows off--for real--a flipping-the-bird mechanic, which can be used to varying effect on citizens and police officers.

I'm still excited, but I'm still skeptical about how the AI will work for you. Will players be seeing the mission failed screen because they were controlling the wrong character while the AI, with the sense of direction of Big Smoke shooting at someone hanging off a train right in front of him, charges into a barrage of bullets? It could be, and most likely will be, great, but there's still the hint of disappointment with GTA IV lingering in my mind (still a good game) that's nagging away that the whole switching between 3 protagonists dealio will end up a bit messy. GTA on the last gen was the best series on the last gen. Make it so for this gen Rockstar

Wonder how the switching would work outside of missions.

This game is going to have so much replayability. I don't know if ill ever be done with it.
