Gabe Newell and J.J. Abrams want to collaborate on films, games

Valve and J.J. Abrams' studio Bad Robot want to make beautiful interactive narratives together. Gabe Newell and Abrams revealed in their D.I.C.E. summit opening keynote that the two studios have been in talks to adapt Half-Life and Portal for the silver screen, and to collaborate on a video game, Kotaku reports.

"We're going to find out if there's a way we can work with you on a Portal and Half-Life movie," Newell said. We can't imagine he'd just toss that out there without significant discussion beforehand.

Talk of the game was equally casual, with Abrams saying Bad Robot has an idea for a game it would like to collaborate with Valve on. Note that this wouldn't be the first time the two worked together--remember that odd little "interactive trailer" for Abrams' Super 8 that shipped as an extra with Portal 2?

When the two weren't busy dropping hints about potential collaborations, they discussed the differing strengths of films and games as storytelling mediums.

Wait so: Star Trek, Star Wars, Portal and half-life? This is a lot of nerd-power for one man.

I don't see how portal can be a good movie.

Doesn't have the game's atmosphere. There is no humor and like many fan made projects its just a pretentious piece of crap that takes itself too seriously and try so hard to be "artsy".

I'm referring to it more as a representation of how Portal and/or its universe can be put into live-action film form. I'm more than confident that they could make a film with the appropriate atmosphere.

think you been smoking too much "GANJA!" mate.

Even if J.J. Abrams directs one of Valve's video games into a movie, it might probably be horrible as usual with Hollywood movie adaptation of a video game.

...Isn't Abrams gonna be super busy though? he's spearheading the two most important sci-fi movie franchises ever, after all...
  • Fruitbat - February 6, 2013 1:12 p.m.

A Portal movie could be an absolute classic - great characters, great dialogue and presumably plenty of quick-fire, tightly scripted scenes to complement the open, player-controlled moments of the game.
