First Resident Evil 4 HD screens make El Gigante look prettier than ever before. In a way

Resident Evil 4. HD. Resident Evil 4 HD! We heard rumours yesterday that such an incandescent combination of digital wonders was to bless us with its presence, and now, unless Capcom has taken to playing around with Photoshop's image-sharpening controls to mess with us on quiet lunchtimes, we have screenshot proof that the rumour was true.

What does it look like? It looks like Resident Evil 4 HD! Resident Evil 4! In HD!

Above: Last-gen Resi 4 on the left, Resi 4 HD on the right

You might remember that I was getting rather excited yesterday at the prospect of how good a cleaned-up Resi 4 could look today. After all, it was one o the most visually stunning games of the last generation, setting a standard that was rarely, if ever, equalled. And it seems I'm not going to be disappointed. Hell, I've seen more than a few current-gen games that don't look this good. Still no word on whether this is a remastering of the lovely, high-polygon, dynamically-lit Gamecube original or the ropey PS3 port, but I'm crossing fingers, legs and eyes that it's the 'real' version.

Want more? Well we have more! From the castle section, this has appeared:

Above: The weekly Palpatine techno party loved how much more fly their moves looked in HD

And just in case you'd forgotten that it was coming along for the HD ride, here's a shot of the pixelled-up new version of Code Veronica:

Okay, so Ronny never looked as good as Resi 4, but the lighting and grimy environments look like they're getting a highly atmospheric tickle with the HD stick. Here's a very similar shot from the original for comparison:

So, whaddaya reckon? Any more excited than you were yesterday now that you have a rough idea of how the Resident Evil Revival Selection is going to look? Any less? Impressed but really waiting for some lighter screens for a proper comparison (as I am)? Let me know.

Now if you'll excuse me I'll be off practicing how to squeeze an infeasibly large number of heavy objects into a suitcase.

I can't wait for this to come out. I hope they have chievos and trophies.
  • soranamineforever - April 15, 2011 5:27 p.m.

Forget El Gigante in HD. What we need to see is Ashely in her original outfit in HD. Right? Right.

I'm really glad that is is going to be a boxed game rather than a download. And graphics always look better in motion than in screen shots so I'm fairly certain it'll look great.
  • ventanger - March 25, 2011 5:33 a.m.

If it doesn't have campaign co-op, I don't care. That's the ONLY thing RE5 got right, and they're going to exclude it from their better games? Capcom, sometimes you're smart, sometimes you're stupid.

"Okay, so Ronny never looked as good as Resi 4, " I don't get it...
  • taterboob - March 24, 2011 11:23 p.m.

Still waiting for a proper remake of RE2...

As much as I absolutely loved RE 4 when it first came out, it has kind of been redundant by Dead Space so a HD remake of it isn't going to do much for me. Code Veronica was shit as well so I couldn't care less for that.
  • Yaro - March 24, 2011 9:01 p.m.

Moving while aiming and trophies are the only things I want from this. :P
  • Spybreak8 - March 24, 2011 8:03 p.m.

    So less blurry, check.
  • Fiirestorm21 - March 24, 2011 7:14 p.m.

I would think that Capcom would do the Game Cube version, not the PS2 one... Just common sense. But...these are the same people that think the way to make your game scarier is to give it shitty controls, so maybe I shouldn't be so optimistic. Me, I'm waiting for my HD remakes of Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank. Then all will be right with the world.
  • GorditaSlim - March 24, 2011 6:37 p.m.

Well, Code Veronica looks...darker. Can't we just have RE6 and leave RE4 (the amazing game that it was) in the past?
  • wampastompa - March 24, 2011 6:06 p.m.

RE4 is the only gave my girlfriend has ever actually enjoyed watching me play. So excited to get it on 360
  • infernox - March 24, 2011 6:04 p.m.

im pretty sure resi 4 didnt look like that. thats some sort of vaseline filter or something.
  • garethstolzen - March 24, 2011 5:56 p.m.

Still no word on whether this is a remastering of the lovely, high-polygon, dynamically-lit Gamecube original or the ropey PS3 port ummmmmmmmm ps2 port duuuuu
  • Balaska - March 24, 2011 5:08 p.m.

I still play CV on my DC, CV-X was appaling in the UK, it was bordered and ran at 50hz on the PS2. The shot of CV looks much like Resi 1 on the GC and that is a good thing. CV does look a little ropey these days, still the best traditional Resi though with excellent environments and superb gameplay.
  • xombiesarelove - March 24, 2011 5 p.m.

HD Code Veronica just looks like somebody upped the brightness. That seems kinda counterproductive for a survival horror game. I know there's only 3 (2 and a half?) screens so far but I've already bought RE4 twice and still have CV-X. I'm not sure this is gonna be enough for me to buy either again.
  • AdonisX82 - March 24, 2011 4:55 p.m.

And before anyone points it out, I am aware it's not a new engine or anything like that.
  • AdonisX82 - March 24, 2011 4:54 p.m.

I've played Resi 4 to death. In fact, I'd say of all the games i've ever played, that's the one i've played start to finish the most. That first pic... The "HD" looks normal to me, and the standard side just looks like crap. If either side was photo shopped, i'd say it was the left, to make the right look better. It's hard to say if it's an Hd pic though because all the textures on the left are dark and plain. the line should've gone halfers on el gigante. and same with the CV pic, the "HD" one just looks normal...
