Fallout and Portal take cover in evolving book art project

Actual books based on videogames are hit and miss. Faux book covers based on videogames, however, rarely disappoint. Although she isn't the first artist to blend modern game concepts with dusty old literary jackets, UK artist A.J. Hateley's growing portfolio deserves a quick scan nonetheless – especially if this is your first viewing. See if you can guess which games she's drawn on for inspiration this time.

A.J. Hateley is a seasoned illustrator and student, and this latest project is one's she's been adding to throughout the year. Many of the viewer comments suggest these would make excellent iPad or Kindle covers. And while we whole-heartedily agree, we'd also buy them in poster, coaster, t-shirt, blanket, commemorative plate and knitted sweater form as well.

Visit Hateley's portfolio for more works, or check out similar projects by another UK artist, Olly Moss.

Zelda one for ipod wallpaper. P.S.: after playing through the entire MGS series over the past two weeks, i can confirm that vagant is corect (some have called the past two weeks a waste of my life; but then again, they have never played metal gear)

Pokemon Red/Blue, Fallout 3, Metal Gear Solid, Portal, Majora's Mask, Left 4 Dead, Half-Life, Katamari Damacy, Shadow of the Colossus, Bioshock very cool!

The Shadow of the Colossus one, from a purely artistic/illustrative viewpoint, is beautiful. Sony should give this girl a job in box art design

5 isn't Majora's Mask, it looks more like the Mask of Truth from Ocarina of Time. Majora's Mask has two eyes and spikes. I recently played both of the games again, so I'm pretty positive that's what it is. Anyways, I think I know what all of them are, the only one I can't really say for sure on is the 9th, but I'll take other people's guess and say Shadow of the Collosus. Never seen anything like this before, its very cool.

Straight from the Hateley's mouth, here's the link for purchasing these wonders as posters: http://www.redbubble.com/people/ajhateley/portfolio This article neglects the mention an awesome FF7 railway manual, as well as - control yourself, Dave Houghton - a guide to sunny Greenvale from Deadly Premonition.

I now want this on my wall.

5 is definitely Majora's Mask. 10 is a Little Sister holding up a Splicer's bunny mask. Definitely Bioshock 1. (See "by Sander Cohen") The ONLY one I couldn't recognize was number 6: L4D. I mean, I guess the 4 on the upper left should have tipped me off.

@Robx The link to Hately's site has been updated. Thank you!

Both links are taking to Olly's site

So am I the only one who noticed that Link is holding his sword in his right hand?

nasal voice: Aaaaactually, 'In the darkness of Shadow Moses' was written by Nastasha Romanenko (The chain smoking Ukrainian weapons expert), not Naomi.

The MGS one is absoutely epic! Oh and GR I think the Haley's portfolio link may be broken as it takes to me to the same page as Oilys does.

The top right is definately Zelda but second from the right on the bottom is the only one I'm not sure about. Shadow of the Colossus was my guess as well.
  • MattoMcFly - July 14, 2011 7:49 p.m.

@jackthemenace and chrisbos - well played. The girl with the bunny mask took me the longest to figure out.
  • jackthemenace - July 14, 2011 7:36 p.m.

Beautiful. Just beautiful. And I'm pleasantly surprised that i managed to recognise all of the covers. At least, I think. I may be wrong about the top right and the second from the right on the bottom, Zelda and Shadow of the Colossus respectively?
  • chrisbos - July 14, 2011 7:36 p.m.

This is very badass. I think the Fallout 3 cover or the Half Life inspired cover is my favorite. And the Bioshock cover is pretty awesome.
