European PSN 'Welcome Back' package detailed

With PSN finally clambering back to its feet (slightly shakily, but it's getting there), Sony has announced the contents of its 'Welcome Back' package. Understanding how put out gamers have been with 24 days without access to PlayStation Store or online gaming, free games and more are being lavished upon each and every existing PlayStation Network user. Hooray! The content is slightly different to the US package, so let's see what us European gamers can expect when the Store is back online.

According to Sony, all existing PlayStation Network members will be able to access the following from PlayStation Store when the service resumes in the near future:

Two PS3 games from the following list:

LittleBigPlanet
Infamous*
Wipeout HD/Fury
Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty
Dead Nation*

For those with PSP accounts, you will also be eligible to download two PSP games from the following list:

LittleBigPlanet PSP
ModNation PSP
Pursuit Force
Killzone Liberation*

*Note, for the German market, InFamous and Dead Nation will be replaced with Super Stardust HD and Hustle Kings in the selection of PS3 games. Also for the German market, Pursuit Force and Killzone Liberation will be replaced with Everybody’s Golf 2 and Buzz Junior Jungle Party in the selection of PSP games. Killzone Liberation will not offer online gameplay functionality.

But there's more!

PSN users will also receive:

  • 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PS Plus subscribers*
  • Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will be given 60 days free subscription.
  • For existing Music Unlimited subscribers, you will be given 30 days free subscription.
  • Sony is working on a Welcome Back offer in PlayStation Home and will share that when it is confirmed.

You'll have to claim your free content within 30 days of the store going back online. There are a few more minor terms and conditions over at Sony's site, but that's the important stuff right there.

What do you reckon? Surprisingly generous, or simply not good enough? Let us know in the comments.

@TheElephantManchurian1candidate Yeah, you may be a PS+ subscriber, but you know what? So am I! And you know what I remembered that you obviously cant? PS+ is an OPTIONAL service. Your paying for some extras every few weeks, its not stopping you from enjoying your online experience. Besides, your getting your month that you lost back, PLUS and extra month as a way of thanks for subscribing in the first place. TBH, I think your just looking for any excuse to piss and moan...

Could be better. Aside from dead nation, and possibly wipeout, all the titles are old releases that most people have already played. Nevermind that we already have LittleBig Planet 2 now, and Infamous 2 will be out shortly. TBH, I'd rather see some free store credit to spend on what I want, rather then being forced to choose between some games I already own/owned or was never interested in...

Considering In the terms of service and use contract that everybody agrees to in order to use PSN, Sony actually didn't owe us s**t. The fact that they are giving us all this is quite generous on their part, even if many people may already have those games. Plus they had to work with the publishers of said games to get any games available for free, so blame for the so-called 'poor selection' can't lay solely with Sony

PSN has been down for one month out of around 5 years. Let's say that you feel you paid for a free service in the price of a PS3 (let's say that's $100). 1 month of not being online over 60 months of not being online multiplied by the $100 is $1.66. Sony owe you nothing so take your fee games and quit whining. They've said they will insure you for up to $1 Million for identity theft and for the 17 million accounts that have credit cards they just have to cancel the card and get on with their life. This is a giant fuck up on Sony's part and there's a lot to blame them for, but this is blown out of proportion.

Decent payback i think - lets face it we could of got nothing. As for the PS Plus argument that is null and void you are getting more than refunded for that. Those who do not think that is good enough are free to throw there PS3's in the bin and go play Halo.

@kor2disturbed Dude I'm a PS Plus subscriber, you call that free online? People need to stop making excuses for Song they F'd up big time and lost literally millions of people's details. You shouldn't just roll over and take it just because the games are free.

that is a bunch of ballony !!! i already played those games and have them give me something new!!! what a dissapointmenr :(
  • jackthemenace - May 17, 2011 3:05 p.m.

So two, FULL, FREE games from that list? AWESOME. I always wanted infamous, and a new ratchet and Clank never hurt anyone. OR, is there some GIGANTIC catch?

@TheElephantManchurian1candidate Infamous was awesome, lbp 2 is a lot better, dead nation was really fun, R&C and Wipeout are your opinion, and the ps3 has free online and they're giving you free stuff, How could you possibly complain?
  • Tariqwahab - May 17, 2011 2:20 p.m.

The question now is .. WHEN THE HELL WILL THE PS STORE COME BACK ? even now i can't play mortal kombat online cuz i can't redeem my online code :(
  • HitmanSB07 - May 17, 2011 12:59 p.m.

As i've said before, it's extremely generous that they're doing this. They've lost out on A LOT of money in the past three weeks and now they're giving away free stuff for an already free service. I highly doubt Microsoft would do this.

Is it possible to make an EU PSN account just to grab these?
  • BottleBank - May 17, 2011 11:42 a.m.

LBP is nearly 4 years old, inFamous is no spring chicken, most people who wanted those games will have bought them ages ago. I kinda feel like Sony could have offered some slightly more recent titles. I originally owned LBP, but sold it a long time back. I have Wipeout HD + Fury, its good, nothing more. Whilst i like the general idea of this offer, the titles on offer do not excite me in the slightest. It seems like Sony are saying "Welcome back! Take your pick from these old titles whose sales have tailed off long ago, so its no skin off our noses!" Still, it's free and you can't moan about that i guess!
  • Dragonflame - May 17, 2011 11:40 a.m.

Infamous and LBP for me, never really use my PS3 these days, but those two titles are interesting, just not enough that i wanted to pay for them. Now i get them for free :)
  • spulungkin - May 17, 2011 11:26 a.m.

Man! I'll admit I'm a Sony Fanboys, but this deal sucks... Really, your giving away games that you've already sold a few years ago, Oh Sony! How noble of you...
  • TheElephantManchurianCandidate - May 17, 2011 11:16 a.m.

Looks like a poor selection to me. I didn't like infamous, LBP1 is old news, Dead Nation looked boring as hell and I can't get into the R&C or Wipeout games. It's times like these I hate having a PS3 it sucks for gaming but at least it plays Blu Rays.
  • ithurtstopoop - May 17, 2011 11:06 a.m.

Sounds pretty generous for Sony as long as I don't have to give them my credit card no to receive the free month on PS+
  • philipshaw - May 17, 2011 11:04 a.m.

Sounds great, especially because the games on the list that I'm going to get I was going to buy at one point
  • Squander - May 17, 2011 10:49 a.m.

my goodness the German package sucks... hope it won't affect Austria :(
