Worms: Open Warfare 2

The biggest and best worm-on-worm carnage we've ever seen

Do you have the skill it takes to use old-school bazookas and grenades, or are you more of a jet-packing, air-striking, tech-loving modern wormer? No matter how you play it, we reckon Worms is one of the greatest ever multiplayer games.

Open Warfare 2 is perhaps the most comprehensive version to date. Forget the previous, disappointing, Open Warfare. This one is built on the foundations of Worms Armageddon, which was previously the best of the series, and is consequently rock solid and beautifully balanced.

The core gameplay is the same as ever. You get a fixed amount of time to move one of your team of four worms around a mine-littered landscape, searching for the best spot from which to launch an attack. Then you pick a weapon from an extensive list, fire it at the opposition, and retreat to a safe place. Your turn is then over and you watch while the enemy exacts revenge. Last worm standing wins.

It's hugely strategic if you play with a limited set of weapons, and much less so - but still fun - if you go for the full set. Do you stay at a distance and fire something that may miss its target, or do you get up close and personal, with the risk of instant retribution if you don't wipe off enough hit points to obliterate your victim in one shot?

There are loads of tactics, from digging tunnels for defence to building girders that act as backboards for long-range grenades. Most of them are rendered redundant if you have the complete array of weapons, which includes stuff that can automatically hit any worm, no matter how well it's protected, but the beauty of Open Warfare 2 is that it lets you customise a game that plays exactly how you want it to.
