Diablo III Starter Edition is now free

Blizzard announced today that they will begin offering the Starter Edition of Diablo III free of charge. Up until now, the Starter Edition was available only in the beta, to players waiting for their online payment to clear, and players accessing the game via one of the guest passes found in retail packages.

Starting today, players will be able to download the free game client from (or from a friend's game disc). The Starter Edition will allow players access to the first level of the game including the first major boss, the Skeleton King, and will allow them to reach level 13.

There are restrictions that come with the Starter Edition though. No achievements will be granted until you unlock the full game (though your progress will still accumulate.) There is also no access to the Real-Money Auction House.

Diablo III is Blizzard's third game to come around to this "Starter Edition" strategy. StarCraft II features a similar system which gives access to some of the campaign missions, and World of Warcraft now grants free access up to level 20.

So D3 has a demo....... eh if Minecraft getting a demo was newsworthy then why not :P

Might actually try it. Not had much experience, if any, with a dungeon crawler. I've hovered over the Diablo II Battle Chest at the store a few times, but never took the plunge. Guess this is as good a way as any to see if I gave for the game formula. Not to terribly picky when it comes to games.

They should've kept the full version like this one, because no one cares about achievements (you get those when you, you know, beat the game), and the RMAH needs to go.

I'll check it out to see how it compares to Torchlight, since I'm having fun with that game, and go from there. If it doesn't impress me I'll just get Torchlight 2 instead since it's cheaper, but I'll give D3 a chance first.

The age of the demo has returned - trust someone to put some spin on it
