Dance Fortress 2 video is Lionhead animator’s application to Valve

Shares

James Benson is currently an animator at Lionhead Studios who has recently worked on Fable III. But over the last few months, he’s been busy putting together an epic animated short showing Team Fortress 2 characters dancing to C+C Music Factory’s ‘Everybody Dance Now.’ Speaking to PC Gamer, Benson said, “to be perfectly honest with you, the short is basically my application to Valve, so wish me luck.” We wish you the best of luck James!

You can check out Benson’s Dance Fortress 2 video below.

Hey, this is James Benson. Could you please change the article to reflect that I no longer work at Lionhead? I don't want to give people the impression I applied while I was still at Lionhead, it'll make me look like an arsehole, thanks!

@ ventanger, your understanding of the games industry is hopelessly outdated. Large companies with high production values rarely, if ever, ask for "jack of all trades" applicants. Time spent designing levels, modelling characters, programming, etc is time spent NOT ANIMATING. Therefore the individuals animation skills will not be as good as they would have been if they concentrated purely on a chosen discipline

JayBeat, It's not from WoW originally lol, did you actually believe that when every other dance in the game is taken from the real world?

dances were cool but could have worked more with camera dynamics..

As a long time TF2er I find this to be weird. I can tell he spent time on it and everything, but it doesnt have the awkward robotic movements of the actual vale tools. Weird reverse uncanny valley anyone?

The sniper dance is the blood elf dance from WOW. Would just like to prove that i knew that.

Huh... umm.. I hate to deflate this guys balloon, but character animation is a teensy tiny fragment of the industry. Wouldn't you want to exhibit some kind of proficiency in.. I dunno, texture art, 3d modeling, programming, level design, etcetera etcetera etcetera. If you want to apply for Rooster Teeth, it's perfect, but if I was at valve I wouldn't take a second look at such a one trick pony. It's like a guy applying for ILM because he recreated the Death Star out of Legos.

It's quite enjoyable. I think I might need to do something similar.
