CoD: Black Ops Escalation DLC features 'Call of the Dead,' starring Romero, Trejo, Gellar, and more

The upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 'Escalation' DLC will feature a new mode called (and why hasn't this been used before?) 'Call of the Dead.' That much we knew, but now we have a trailer which reveals that - wait, what? - Danny Trejo? Sarah Michelle Gellar? Robert "Freddy Kreuger" Englund? Michael Rooker (Merle in AMC's The Walking Dead)? George Romero?! How many non-questions can we ask?! How you do this, Treyarch?

"This is Treyarch's tribute to the legendary George Romero, who truly defined the zombie genre and whose incredible work has been such an inspiration to our team." said Black Ops director Dave Anthony. "It was an absolute honor to work with such an amazing and talented cast whose passion and energy brought their characters instantly to life. Fans are going to love this."

While the Romero throwback zombie theme isn't new, it's hard to get enough of, and wow - this isn't at all what we were expecting. We expected a new mode, perhaps with different rules, and in that respect, it's a bit disappointing that Call of the Dead is a single map. Still, it's far from an ordinary map, so consider our previous expectations moot.

So, horror fans, is this an awesome service to you, or is Activision trying too hard?

this looks amazing but the 4 multiplayer maps don't look too great...is the 1 zombie map worth $15? it might be for Machete...if the PSN ever starts working again that is...>:(

I have no interest in Black Ops but that looks sick. A lot like L4D though.

Being a horror hound, I find this to be very silly. George Romero is washed up for ideas (and probably money too), and even though Treyarch is trying to pull off the whole "grindhouse" feel, their audience that plays this dehydrated shooter isn't even going to understand it or appreciate it for more than what it is. Nice effort on the marketing scheme, but I have to say that I will not be re-purchasing a copy of BLOPS just to play this crap. Danny Trejo is way more enjoyable in "Machete" and Sarah Michelle Gellar looks way better in "I Know What You Did Last Summer." And are you kids tired of zombies yet? Geezus.

The song is from Return of the Living Dead. It's 45 Grave- Party Time.

As much as I would love this, it's the only map I would play, so I don't think it's worth $15.

I agree with Sebastian. Just can not say no to Trejo.

So where can I get this as a standalone game ?
  • podsaurus - April 27, 2011 10:14 a.m.

That could be a game in and of itself! Never played zombie mode, now I kinda want to.

This only reinforces the fact that when I do finally get around to picking up Black Ops, I will mostly be getting it for the new zombie shenanigans.

Coolest. Trailer. Ever. I love the Grindhouse style.

"We expected a new mode, perhaps with different rules, and in that respect, it's a bit disappointing that Call of the Dead is a single map" Nor is it surprising. For 15 bucks a pop, I wish Treyarch and Activision would beef up their DLC a little more. While I'm overjoyed to see such talent in a map (almost as surprising as seeing presidents and their cohorts in '5'), I would be much more inclined if they could add two or more maps to each release. I know they can only do so much before they gear up for the next CoD.

Robert Englund: Is a horror movie actor that is actually good. He made the campyness of the later Nightmare films actually somewhat entertaining. I may have to go against my morals and buy $15 CoD DLC.

Damn it, I thought I was done with Black Ops. Ascension disappointed me majorly, but come on...this looks awesome. Only reason I'm getting the DLC.

I'm not sure but this map looks like discovery. Also what does George Romero have for arms in this map?

I like the Zombie mode, but its depressing that you can never win, so you have nothing to strive for, and it seems that i always get to the same round, then it becomes ridiculous. When 2 trench gun shots dont kill the zombies, its just stupid. Treyarch NEEDS to make a spereate zombie game, with possible endings, the ability to jump to rounds you've achieved before (like GeOW2's Horde mode) and make more zombies attack, but with less health. (leaning more towards L4D's infected but with a bit more health.) I've put alot of thought into this... and I'm willing to put money in it too, Treyarch.
