Catherine difficulty patch announced less than a week after its release

Catherine is hard. Really hard. We've been banging our heads against the early levels since the game's release in Japan last week. Apparently we're not the only ones. Publisher Atlus has announced an upcoming patch that it hopes will address numerous complaints from players concerning the game's difficulty.

Writing on the game's official blog, director Katsura Hashino said, “We balanced the game so that the player feels thrilled with a sense of achievement when they clear the level. But it's also possible the staff is just too good at the game at this point.”

In the meantime, we’ll be working our way through Catherine in its current (ultra hard) state. Expect a more in-depth preview of Atlus' nightmarish RPG with hands-on impressions soon.

A puzzle game. All this softcore porn teasing for the past 8mths and it's only a puzzle game??? Japan can keep it, it will not sell well here in the US.

a.k.a. the "for people who just want to get to the sex" patch. I would like my games to be uber hard (at least when they're fair and well made). though that opinion may be biased since I'm a diehard fan of Super Meat Boy.

It's nice to see hard games out there in a sea of easy games. I miss the old days when beating a game was a true accomplishment. Most games these days just require a little investment of time, but can be beat by anyone.

Wait they can patch difficulty settings? Well than some developers have no excuse fixing issues that have to do with B.S. mode in games.
  • Robusken - February 21, 2011 9:23 p.m.

Could it really be that hard? I usually expect some sort of tougher difficult when games are developed by a japanese developer.

to be fair,it's a puzzle game so i'm guessing if it really is that hard there might be someone uploading a simple strategy online to set hard piece 'go to 3rd from right box push forward etc etc',i guess all that would be up to you was timing

I can relate. Everybody kept telling me my LBP2 level was too hard so I had to make it easier.

Atlus USA localized 3D Dot Game Heroes, Atlus USA does not develop games. They are not responsible for the difficulty of the game.

Didn't Atlus make 3D Dot Game Heroes? It has its moments of difficulty as well... I remember getting pissed off during the flame temple.

Is there any indication of an English-language release yet? I'm really looking forward to give this game a go.

From what I remember, most all Atlus games are fairly difficut, this news disappoints me greatly, if I happen to import the game(which is very likely), I will NOT be installing this patch.

Apparently Japanese gamers have softened the hell up. From what I've seen of the game, it looked fairly accessible. Atlus isn't dumb; they've got to know about the demand for the game in the States. What's taking them so long to at least announce that they're localizing it?
