Borderlands 2's 'Golden Key' treasure chest revealed

Back in May when the Borderlands 2 preorder packs were first revealed, they included a "Golden Key" that nobody quite understood. Today, Gearbox Software has revealed the in-game treasure chest that the key will open. 

Seen above, the chest itself is a bit of a riddle that each player must solve for his or herself. See, the chest holds random, very powerful loot. However, the loot that pops out will be powerful only for the level at which you open it. 

Therefore, if you open it the day the game launches, you'll have a great weapon to start the game, but you've also just squandered your chance to see what might come out later on down the road. 

So do you hold off until you reach the late stages of the game? Or open it quickly and wonder til it drives you mad what might have come out ten levels later.

Borderlands 2 launches next week on September 18.

    Backup your profile data save to another profile or USB stick. Load your game and go open the chest. Save and quit the game. Delete your profile data save and reload the old one.

    I thought the promos for the 'premium club' or whatever it's called said that the chest wasn't going to be available until post-final boss? Or is that just something I was imagining the whole time? It's a pity really, I just pre-ordered through Amazon instead of GAME, and I could've saved myself almost a quarter of the price. Still, It'll be nice to have free access to the Mechromancer as soon as she's available, instead of having to go through the hassle of getting Microsoft Points, and the jewel still sounds sorta handy. Ish.

    I want to wait until I hit the level cap to open it, but realistically I'll probably be at level 8-10 before greed and impatience get the better of me and I crack it open.

    Or you could just open an .ini and find where the key is and give yourself multiples. It's not like you'll get banned from anything for cheating, nothing is ranked or monitored.

    ... Speaking of which I hope this game isn't ruined by infidelity powerful mods like the last one was. That was terrible...

    Wonder if You get one key per character/playthrough, or simply a one-use, once-in-your-lifetime key. And if they want to be real dicks, they can let you obtain another key(s) for, say... $5?

    Okay, found it. The chest contains Purple items. Iin pre-DLC BL1, it means the second-highest tier (power/rarity-wise) and highest "normal" tier (Orange items are unique/"legendary" and carry special properties. The key is absolutely one-use only, so I figure You should use it with the character with whom You find the game most diifficult.

    Yeah, probably the same here. I hope they take DLC into account when Also the loot is probably just going to be one of the better purple rarity weapons. Likely it will skew towards max specs for that particular weapon type, and it's random besides. I'd hate to get a max specs version of a weapon I never use....What a waste it would be.

    Whoops. Didn't finish. I hope they take DLC into account when...people are given the option to wait. I'd hate to be level 61 or 69 or whatever, only to find the loot in the chest is locked at level 50. BTW: Wonder what happens if someone cheats and maxes out their level early on (as in, beyond main game levels) just to see what is possible at high levels?

    I'm not opening that **** until ALL the DLC is out and I know what the official level cap is LOL No way am I doing it first thing in the game!

    I wonder if this chest will be in non-preorder copies of the game. I'd hate if it was right there but I couldn't open it.
