You wait ages for a movie called Bastards and two come along in the same five months. Not to be confused with Claire Denis’ moody noir thriller from February, Deborah Perkin’s documentary focuses on Rabha El Haimer, a Moroccan single mother whose child has no status in society thanks to her teenage tribal wedding never being made legal.

While the subject matter genuinely shocks, the film’s intimate, small-scale nature means it’s better suited to a Tuesday evening on More4 rather than a trip to the pictures. Still, one digression featuring a more earth middle-aged single mum elicits awe at her heroic ability to laugh at hehr horrible situation.
