Atlus currently has 'no plans' to release Catherine in North America

We've been following Atlus' erotic, neurotic thriller for months, but until today, we've had no official word on whether or not Catherine will be released outside of Japan. Now we do, and the answer (roughly paraphrased), is "Ehh, not right now." Our creepy dream sheep will be very sad creepy dream sheep tonight.

"Catherine is a Japan-only game and there are no plans for a NA release at this time. Sorry about that!" reads a statement issued to BeefJack.

Above: We recently FAP'd the Japanese PSN demo - enjoy!

But wait just an in-game day/night cycle - Catherine was developed for both the PS3 and 360, despite the 360's standing at the bottom of the Japanese console market (according to VGChartz, about 1.5M units compared to the PS3's 6.4M), and debuted in Japan at the top of the charts, beating Marvel vs. Capcom 3. That doesn't sound like a "Japan-only game" to us.

Granted, Catherine is story and dialog heavy, so localization would be a hefty task, but we're still not convinced that Atlus has no plans - not even a hint of an inkling of a plan - to bring the game westward. Maybe we're just fooling ourselves, but c'mon, for reals? It doesn't make sense, but we'll whine harder if we have to.

No! Me and my friends made so many jokes about this! Clerk: Hi how can I help you? Customer: (Whispering) Yeah, do you have... ummm, Catherine? Clerk: Can you speak up? Customer: Ca-Cath-ummm Catherine. Clerk: Did you say Catherine? Customer: No what the hell's wrong with you? (Whispering) Yeah I would like 3 copies. Also, doesn't Japan make Ape Escape? When are we getting #4?

Well, it seems that there is now at least one article referencing the email that I mentioned in my previous post. Apparently I'm not the only one that thought the pink color looked familiar... Anyway, you heard it here first!

This could be turned into a meme. Make your first HD game Don't release it outside of Japan.

This really broke my heart to hear about this, buuuuut... I joined the "Atlus Faithful" because of this game, and just got an email about three hours ago with the subject "Do you still like us?" and an image that simply says "Do you still like us?" with a pink motif. At first, I was thinking "the hell? What does that even mean?" but then I realized that the pink hue that they used looked very similar to the one used on the boxart for Catherine, as well as the little emblem thing. Do I still like them? Depends... Was their email cryptic? Most definitely! Anyway, who knows what it could mean?

But why.. I mean if the localization is hard, I'll settle for original dub with English sub. I mean.. I.. do they not want my money?.. I'll give it to you. It works with Squeenix! I'll pay dammit.. I'll payyyy

Catherine is probably the next Atlus game that I'm going to purchase though... (unless Atlus is involved with Disgaea 4?) ...which is to say, I'm doing a sit in until they release Catherine in the US. (Subtitles are ok if they want to cheap out on localising the voice acting ha ha)

I actually really want to play this game; I tend to mentally and violently object to most bizarre Japanese games... but this one is SO different and actually has fairly (from what I've read) original story and themes that pique my interests. I'm honestly hoping for a Western (U.S. and European) release since this game looks too insane to just stay in Japan.

why would they make it for xbox and not release it outside it of japan come on atlus, you don't even need to dub it, just translate the subtitles.

Watch Atlus change their tune at GDC. This game has gotten far to much coverage and praise in the west, just to end up being a Japan only title.

  • CoryM1134 - February 25, 2011 10:59 p.m.

Super duper. We'll get it two or three years from now. The game will feel dated because it's two or three years old, and subsequently get average reviews. They'll barely advertise it, so it will barely sell. Then, they will once again say, "Well, I guess the Americans just don't 'get it.'" If Japan wants to continue to complain about their role in the current gaming market compared with the West, they better stop this ridiculous way of doing business.

Crap, there goes finding out why the hell there are sheep!
  • Mamudo - February 25, 2011 10:55 p.m.

"Sorry about that"? Really? That's all? It's selling well and there is a demand for it internationally (how much of one I'm not sure). Ugggh, I really want to see this came be localized.
