Amazing Spider-Man 2 writer talks villains

Amid all the excitement generated by Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti and Chris Cooper signing on to play various rogues in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , you could be forgiven for feeling a nagging sense of unease, borne out of memories of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3

That film lined up three villains alongside each other, only for the individual impact of each to be severely dampened by the others. So with Electro, Rhino and Norman Osborn all reporting for duty, is this film running the same risk?

Not according to co-writer Alex Kurtzman it isn’t, with the scribe arguing that each antagonist has been chosen for a very specific reason…

“I think you have to go into it and say, ‘is this character essential to the story or are you just throwing him in for no reason whatsoever,’” says Kurtzman. “We would never, ever, ever dare to do anything other than what felt like it was organic to the flow of the story.

“[ A ] lot of consideration has been given to the structure of it,” continues Kurtzman, “so hopefully, when you see it, you’ll get the big picture.”

We’d read into that that Norman Osborn may not show off his villainous side just yet, with he and son Harry (Dane DeHaan) probably being introduced as potential baddies for further down the track.

We’ll find out for sure when Marc Webb’s film is released in the UK on 18 April 2014.
