After The Apocalypse review

This chilling doc explores the aftermath of Soviet experiments in Kazakhstan

Between 1949 and 1991 the Soviet Union detonated nuclear bombs in Kazakhstan, using the local population as human guinea pigs in radiation experiments.

Decades later the area known as The Polygon is still irradiated and the locals bear a terrible price.

Brit filmmaker Antony Butts’ moving doc exposes the tragedy of the experiments – not least of all horrific birth defects – as he follows a deformed local woman intent on having a child despite the risks.

“We’re like laboratory rabbits here,” complains a toothless, vodka-swilling shepherd. “Nothing good has come of this… only bad.”
