343 Industries: Halo 4 begins the Reclaimer Trilogy

If you're a Halo die-hard – not just “someone who likes them games where the green feller shoots aliens,” but who's read all the novels, memorized all the scripts and doesn't find the relationship between Master Chief and Cortana creepy – then does 343 Industries have a game for you. Hell, it's got three: the new games, it was revealed at a PAX panel this weekend, will explore the relationship between the faceless hero and his bodiless life-partner, as well as delving into the past of Chief and the Halo universe in what's being called the Reclaimer Trilogy. A concept-art trailer teases some of the games' upcoming sights and locations.

Here's a look at some concept art and footage from the new trilogy, animated and set to a foreboding soundtrack so you'll keep watching. The new games, 343 says, will explore elements mentioned as far back as the original Xbox titles, as well as those added to the terminals of Halo: Anniversary Edition. A point of comparison might be the Metroid Prime trilogy's elaboration on elements of the original side-on titles – but 343's Josh Holmes promises the games will still “play like Halo.”

Here, Frank O'Connor discusses the new trilogy with the best-named woman in games, Kiki Wolfkill. 343 says the new titles will go further into Master Chief's character as well as his “unique relationship” with Cortana, aiming to “sell the fantasy that Master Chief is an 800-pound hero that is part tank, part jet fighter.” Even for one of the most speculated-upon masked heroes in all of gaming, that's admittedly a possibility that hasn't been raised yet.

You've still got a year until Halo 4 offers some clues as to what an 800-pound hero that’s part tank, part jet fighter (come on, seriously) looks like – which gives 343, Microsoft and co plenty of time to tell us more about the first in the Reclaimer Trilogy. Excited?

@LoneWUNK. Well technically Onyx was destroyed at the end of the book, although the events of Reach (the game) retconned the book "The fall of Reach", and therefore potentially "Ghosts of Onyx", although they still mention the SPARTAN 3 training program on Onyx on the Reach website. @Gilligan. What? Not sure if trolling or Halo cannon fail. Correction spree officialy over. Also, whats up with the music in the concept art video? Sounds all Mass Effecty...

The Sentinels could have reformed around the dyson sphere after wiping out the remaining Covenant just as they were before the construct split apart. Although admittedly some of that concept art looks pretty organic. Maybe only a percent of the sentinels broke away to combat the Covenant.

I too can't tell if Gilligan is trolling or not, but either way. This is going to be sick. If he is truly stumbling upon Onyx, that would be awesome. It is definitely of Forerunner look and structure. Needless to say, I cannot wait to get my hands on the Halo 4 story :P BTW, Major lol @IsaacShadow, see ya. No one cares. @ those who are comparing this with CoD. Please stop, lol, the games are nothing alike. CoD has the same usual story (someone taking over the world, we stop it) in their games as well as monotonous same style Multiplayer in every game. Halo is quite the opposite, a story that is actually continuing to evolve. As well as changes to the MP. Don't revolve around a game based SOLELY on how it plays in multiplayer. Seriously

I would put money on the 'planet' being Onyx (forerunner construct). Anyone who has read Ghosts of Onyx will appreciate why that's an exciting prospect!
  • Gilligan - August 30, 2011 2:16 a.m.

If its going to be a prequel(s) please don't do a Master Chief prequel! Please go back even further, like concentrating on the super advanced Pre-historic humans. Mainly the battle between them and the forerunners, don't just stick with some filler story for Mr 117!

Well this is the first piece of Halo 4 news that has got me excited in any way, I dont think it will ever be a bad game, all 343 need to do is copy the formula bungie laid out....but i'd quite like to hope for something amazing

Oh god no. I got off the "Halo" train soon as Bungie got off. No way I'm wasting money on this.

Sounds interesting, though I'd much prefer if they broke out of the mainline Halo series and made this run along the lines of Metroid Prime.
  • Helios - August 29, 2011 5:27 p.m.

I am intrigued. Further developing the relationship between ol' John and Cortana is something I look forward to seeing.

    Yes! Yes!! YES!!!

I feel like there'll be a long time coming without any info on Halo 4 released, at least not until Anniversary comes out. It'll be like the wait between ODST and the Reach teaser at the Spike VGAs. Maybe there'll be something there for Halo 4 this year. One can hope.

I'm a little apprehensive about all this. Don't get me wrong, I love Halo and all it's games, novels, and comics, but if they don't change SOMETHING gameplay-wise, well... it's gonna be just like Call of Duty. Now, I know Halo's story is more epic and arguably better, at least in my opinion, but the sole reason I stopped playing Call of Duty was because it was the same damned thing over and over again. But still, my hopes are high I'm not sure if that's good or not.

Anyone that is knowledgeable with the fiction should know the story is going to revolve around the forerunners.
  • bigwill1221 - August 29, 2011 4:55 p.m.

I'm a die hard halo fan till 343 got the reins, now they are just going to milk it.
  • NotBraze - August 29, 2011 4:11 p.m.

Cool stuff, I'm actually really looking forward to this. I was a fan of the original three games, but was very disappointed with ODST and Reach and I'm really hoping Halo 4 is a return to form. Also, just a note, am I the only one who thinks the music in the concept art trailer sounds way more like Mass Effect than Halo?
  • Rustash - August 29, 2011 3:03 p.m.

I'm gonna put it out there and say the new "villains" are the Forerunners. Just a hunch.
  • SwishiestB0g - August 29, 2011 5:28 p.m.

I really hope not as then they're ruining even more of the fiction haha. Granted I have no earthly idea who the new enemy could be so you could be right, but I hope not.
  • Plan10FromOuterSpace - August 30, 2011 1:24 a.m.

I think tbh the covenant will still play a big part, although they have been more or less defeated a large amount of time has passed between 3 and 4 and i dont see any reason they coudnt come back, I like the idea of they're being aliens that have kinda intermingled with human society and fight alongside us, and also purists who still despise the human race....something like that :')
  • spideralex90 - August 29, 2011 2:58 p.m.

I'm excited for this. I have faith in 343 and like they said there is a lot of story left to be told. I hope they can outdo Bungie, but they've got some very large shoes to fill.
