Zelda boss Aonuma: Don't rule out Majora's Mask 3D

With Ocarina of Time 3D having returned the 13-year-old game to public attention, it's only natural to wonder whether more reinvented Zeldas could become available on the 3DS. The obvious contender for a remake would be Ocarina's sequel, Majora's Mask, though with its unique time mechanic and creepy deviation from series convention, is by no means a sure thing. Still, says series producer Eiji Aonuma, there's no reason it couldn't happen if the fan support were there.

“One of the big things that made this remake possible,” Aonuma tells Nintendo Power, “was that there was an outpour of emotions from people who said they would like to see this game done.” If the fan response to the idea of a Majora's Mask 3D were positive enough, he says the title “wouldn't be an utter impossibility.” That vaguest of possibilities acknowledged, the producer muses on whether the game might offer a welcome variation on the Majora's formula: “a handheld Majora's Mask where you could kind of just set things down on your own time - close it, set it aside and come back to it later - might be a gameplay element some fans will actually take to.” Though with Majora's Mask never having commanded the same level of obsession as its predecessor, it'd be up to the fans to make a persuasive case for the title's viability.
