Red & White review

Knowledge of Indonesia’s brutal post-war struggle for independence from the Dutch isn’t common.

Pity, then, that Yadi Sugandi’s over-ambitious hotchpotch will do little to change that.

A band of cookie-cutter cadets from the country’s various classes and creeds volunteer together – and hate each other.

Guess what? It’s not long before peasant and posho, Christian and Muslim become best buds and unite for some ineptly staged combat.

With the score swelling ludicrously every time the leads so much as scratch their heads, this would-be creation myth falls flat on its face.
