For once were looking forward to getting candy corn

Double Fine is a beloved developer thats known for imaginatively original games like Psychonauts and Broken Age. 2010s Costume Quest is similarly beloved among Double Fine fans, but some were likely surprised that the sugary RPG would be the developers first sequel to date. Then again, the Halloween-turned-dungeon crawler action is too sweet to be denied, and the gameplay is getting as refined as the sugar used in the virtual candy.

Costume Quest 2 picks up right after the Grubbins On Ice DLC to the last game, with the four youngsters (spoilers) using a portal to warp to another Halloween adventure. The kids are now collecting candy via turn-based battles in New Orleans, and the world is much bigger this time around. As the setting grows, the action has been streamlined, with quicker button prompts and more defensive options to deepen the combat. Costume Quest superfans also got their wish in the Candy Corn costume joining in on the fight, though he cant do much more than take damage and provide moral support--meaning hes basically as useless as normal candy corn.

Costume Quest 2s New Orleans is more than twice the size of the last games map, and makes for a fun backdrop for more of Double Fines trademark humor. The best moment of the brief demo had to be the clown of the group challenging a kid dressed as the devil to a musical contest. As the devil played his fiddle, the clown fought back by sporadically honking his horn until the devil gave up in annoyed exasperation. If the game has more cute scenes like that in store, then I hope its just the next in a long line of Halloween adventures.
