Capcom Arcade Cabinet downloads 80s hits

Capcom will celebrate its upcoming 30th anniversary with the Capcom Arcade Cabinet: Retro Game Collection, a downloadable series of arcade classics for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Famitsu spoke with producer Kenji Kataoka (translated by Polygon) about the collection.

"[W]e're definitely focusing on the games that came out earlier on in our history," Kataoka said. "These are completely faithful reproductions, too. You used to have arcade games ported to the NES and such and wind up being completely different titles on that platform, but that's not the case here. Even if there were bugs in the original, we've kept them in there if we felt we needed to in order to retain the original feel of the game."

The lineup will celebrate the 1980s arcade titles which gave Capcom its first taste of global success, with fantasy side scroller Black Tiger leading the charge. Other entries hinted at in the Famitsu article include 1942, Commando, Gun.Smoke and Trojan.

Each one will be presented as accurately as possible with support for arcade sticks, Kataoka said, but will also allow for literally game-changing modifications such as weapon damage and collision range.

"I was able to use these functions to reach the ending on pretty much all of the games [we have planned], so they're great for people who were annoyed they couldn't beat them back then. For people [who don't want changes], it's set up so all additional functions can be turned on and off."

Capcom hasn't nailed down a distribution model for the collection yet, but Kataoka said one likely option will be multiple packs with "really surprisingly cheap prices."

We confirmed that Capcom Arcade Cabinet will be coming to the west with a Capcom representative, who also said to expect more details on February 7.
