After crafting a surprise hit with US college dancing frat pack flick Stomp The Yard, Sylvain White has suddenly become an in-demand director.
He’s already attached to the crime thriller Static and an adaptation of Frank Miller’s Ronin, but he’s apparently putting both of those aside for now to helm… a script by Paul WS Anderson? We can only assume he hit his head recently. But no – he’s just gotten himself attached to the big chair for Castlevania, the live-action adaptation of the vampire video game that is busy bubbling away at Rogue Pictures. Anderson’s script finds a Transylvanian knight sheltering his men from the overwhelming Turkish army in a gothic castle. Imagine his surprise, then, when the creepy structure’s real owner turns out to be the first, most powerful vampire. And to make matters worse the usual complimentary coffee maker has been replaced with a fang-induced death.
Apparently White is a bit of a fan of the game and found the concept too good to pass up. "Most of the vampire films have been present or set in the future, from Blade to Underworld, and I was attracted by the chance to make a dark, epic period movie that almost has an anime feel to it," he babbled to Variety.
He’ll kick off shooting in Romania and current favourite cheap location South Africa this autumn for a late 2008 release slot.
