Despite official price hike, some Australian retailers are sticking to the old PS5 RRP for now
Ouch, but also, not so ouch.
Sony announced its third major PS5 price hike on March 28, and it's the steepest rise yet: from Thursday, April 2, the base PS5 disc model will rise from AU$829.95 to AU$999.95 in Australia.
The PS5 digital edition, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal are also affected, as follows:
- PS5 – AU$999.95 RRP (up from AU$829.95)
- PS5 Digital Edition – AU$919.95 (up from AU$749.95)
- PS5 Pro – AU$1,399.95 (up from AU$1,199.95)
- PlayStation Portal – AU$389.95 (up from AU$329.95)
If you've already got a PS5 at the moment: congratulations, you don't have to worry for now. But for anyone who has been considering a PS5 purchase, there's a whole lot more urgency involved.
Or at least, until retailers run out of current stock. At time of writing (April 7) a handful of major retailers in Australia, including Amazon, haven't raised their prices just yet on certain PS5 models.
Here's a list of retailers selling the PS5 disc model cheaper than the new RRP of AU$999.95:

Most of the big, reputable retailers are sticking to the RRP for the PS5 disc model, as follows:

The digital edition, on the other hand, is going marginally cheaper than its current, soon-to-rise RRP of AU$749 at several outlets:
- Mobilciti eBay - AU$717.99
The Gamesmen eBay - AU$729.95- JB Hi-Fi - AU$749
EB Games - AU$749Big W - AU$749- Target - AU$699
PS5 Pro
If you're after a PS5 Pro, several retailers are offering the current, soon-to-rise RRP of AU$1,199:
Why is the PS5 getting yet another price rise in Australia?
Sony attributes the latest PS5 price hike to the "continued pressures in the global economic landscape". Reading between the lines, this is alluding to the ongoing memory and storage crisis attributable to the AI data centre boom. In other words, it's AI.
Will the PS5 ever be discounted following the price hike?
If history is any indication, yes. Following the 2025 increase from AU$799 to AU$829, Sony offered super steep discounts on the PS5 during its 2025 Days of Play event, which ran from May 28 to June 11 last year. The base model, for example, went for as little as AU$629.
It's unlikely we'll get a discount that steep again. It's also not guaranteed we'll see any discount at all, since the storage and memory crisis had yet to kick off in May last year. Still, if Sony is going to offer a significant discount on the PS5, it's probably going to happen during its next Days of Play event, which typically kicks off in late May.
