Step aside, awful Skyrim Switch 2 port – Bethesda is releasing Oblivion Remastered on Nintendo's new console this year, and I'm not sure how I feel

Although Bethesda Game Studios left us a bit (perhaps an understatement) disappointed with its Skyrim port on Switch 2, there's still a chance the newly announced Oblivion Remastered release on Nintendo's new console might impress… right?

Todd Howard, the Bethesda boss himself, made a short appearance during today's Nintendo Direct – but did he announce anything about The Elder Scrolls 6? The answer is no, and I'm not sure why I do this to myself anymore.

What he did unveil – amid a Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition announcement and a look at Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on the Switch 2 – is a new port of Oblivion Remastered on Nintendo's latest console.

If you remember the Skyrim port on Switch 2, which arrived in December, then you might also recall players discussing how it "runs like wet ass" and is overall a "horrendous" release.

It wasn't a good look for Bethesda, not to mention all of the jokes about how it's like the 117th time or so that the studio has re-launched Skyrim on a new platform, but who knows – Oblivion Remastered might prove to be different.

It's set to launch sometime this year, announced alongside a simple "2026" release date thus far, featuring all the revamped visuals and horrifying Oblivion faces you know and love from the 2025 remake.

Although we've not seen too much of it yet, from what was showcased during the Nintendo Direct, it looks… okay. The framerate could be better, of course, and it's obviously not as nice-looking as it is on the PC, but I love a good handheld game.

Comments under the clip of the new trailer show that fans are a bit wary right now – and understandably so, if you ask me. "I'm going to wait," writes one. "After the lazy Skyrim 30 FPS port, I need to see how the game runs." Another adds, "No release date is crazy."

There are also plenty of excited stans, though, with some exclaiming that they "can't wait" to play the Oblivion Remastered port on Switch 2, whenever it arrives.

Here's hoping that when it does finally drop on the new Nintendo console, it is indeed a better experience than Skyrim has been thus far. I might enjoy poking a bit of fun at Bethesda, but I love The Elder Scrolls myself and am admittedly going to shell out for yet another port.
