Earlier this year, it was reported that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 studio Warhorse had been tapped to develop a new RPG in the Lord of the Rings franchise. So, when several members of Warhorse held a Reddit AMA today, fans had questions.
Asked about the studio's future plans by one Reddit user, content director Ondřej Bittner replies, "We are hard at work on ... something. Obviously we cannot disclose any details but I can share that it is a huge immersive RPG."
Another user directly asked about the rumored Lord of the Rings project. Community manager Tom Grey, taking the wheel of the official Warhorse Reddit account, fields this one, saying, "Obviously we can't comment on future projects, at least not until we're in the future (but if you have a time machine, please show us!)"
In another response, the Warhorse account affirms that its next project is an RPG. This comes up again in other responses from Bittner. He says, "It will definitely be an RPG true to our colours – huge, story-driven and immersive."
Bittner also offers a slim look into the production cycle. "Well we are in the process of working on a new project," he tells another user. "The thing is that after you release a game you have to do something else :) We are staying true to our roots which means immersive RPG rich with details (and hopefully not so buggy)."
And in case you haven't gotten the point yet, the Warhorse account adds, in yet another reply, "Like any good game studio, we're working on a new game. We don't want to stray far from what we know, so we'll be sticking with RPGs for now!"
After two hits in this space, I don't think anybody expected Warhorse to suddenly pivot away from big old RPGs and invest in roguelike deckbuilders or something, but I'm sure Kingdom Come fans will be pleased to hear that they can expect More Of That in some form. As for the Lord of the Rings hype, well, you'll just have to make do with Henry actor Tom McKay fan-casting himself as Aragorn. You know, in case that game is real after all.
