Legendary Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii says he felt that Final Fantasy 10 was "the ultimate perfection of Final Fantasy" when he first saw it. While discussing the battle of the long-running, beloved JRPGs between the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy series, Horii also states that he believes there is a "stark difference" between the two.

With the first game launching in 1986, Dragon Quest ekes out Final Fantasy as the longest enduring JRPG series by just a year. In an interview with Game Informer, Horii explains his experience monitoring the newly born series that was blossoming from the same publisher. "When Final Fantasy originally came out, I was definitely paying attention to it because it was something we needed to look out for," Horii says.
