Originally released for the Amiga back in 1986, Defender of the Crown is a strategy game which had impressive cinematic gameplay and graphics for its time. Set in England during the Middle Ages, your task as one of four Saxon nobles is to raise an army and fight for territory, with the ultimate aim of controlling the country and the crown. Along the way you'll engage in sieges, raids, swordfights, and even jousting tournaments to secure the grip you hold on your expanding realm.
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns marks the 40th anniversary of the game, and features two exciting ways to experience that original adventure. The first is Retro Mode, which is a near-perfect recreation of the Amiga version including all of the original music and features, and this is sure to appeal to both long-term fans of the franchise and retro gaming enthusiasts looking to replay the game authentically.
Alongside that there is Classic Mode, which takes the original experience and gives it a modern reimagining. This features a full makeover including a new visual identity and smoother mechanics while still maintaining the core Defender of the Crown gameplay, to deliver a more accessible adventure for modern audiences.
However, Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns is not just a remaster of the original game, but it also delivers a brand new roguelite experience that will appeal to fans of roguelike and strategy games. Kingdom Mode combines roguelite deck-building with dice-based combat across procedurally generated maps, and special dice mechanics plus fresh abilities to unlock ensure that no two runs will be the same.
You can take on all three of these modes when Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns launches on August 13, 2026 for PC via Steam and GOG, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. Make sure you wishlist it on Steam now, to be notified as soon as it becomes available.
