Despite being a huge Skyrim-head, the lackluster reception to its board game version (and my already owning one table-top Bethesda adaptation) put any thoughts of buying it on ice. However Amazon's started spinning up some tempting Lightning Deals in its most recent roster of Black Friday board game deals.
Right now, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim The Adventure Game is available at Amazon for $93.99, down 37% from its $149.99 MSRP (yeah — it's a big game). There are only a limited number of available sets via this deal, and at the time of writing it's currently 71% sold out.
The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim - Adventure Board Game | $149.99 $93.99 at Amazon
Save $57 - This isn't quite the cheapest price we've ever seen the Skyrim board game for, as it's hit $85 before, but it's not that far off. I don't expect it to go any cheaper over Black Friday.
There are quite a few expansions to the Skyrim board game including an booster to make the game playable by 5-8 players, a miniatures upgrade kit and two content expansions: Dawnguard and From the Ashes.
The above deal is only on the base set but there also small limited-time discounts on the miniatures upgrade kit and player roster expander kit.
Just to be clear, this discount is different to Call to Arms, which is the Elder Scrolls wargame (and which shares some figures with the Adventure Game).
Should you buy the Skyrim board game?
Now, there's no getting around the fact that in our The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim - Adventure Board Game review, we only gave it three stars. It's not like the game is on our list of the best board games. So if you don't know your Skyrim from your — whatever the opposite of Skyrim is — then there are definitely better board games you can spend your money on.
But if you've gotten this far through the article, you're probably enough of a fan of Skyrim to be considering this deal. The nostalgia factor is weighing in. And that makes things a little harder.
What I will say, is that other similar video games have seen better-received board game adaptations. The Fallout board game is fun and we gave a glowing review to Resident Evil: The Board Game, so there might be other titles which appeal to you more.
But if you've already worked your way through a big stack of board games and need something new, perhaps Skyrim is worth trying.
