"I haven't slept in 48 hours": Devs spent 9 years, starting in "my parents' basement," making a Nier Automata-esque action game with the most anime plot imaginable
Magical girls will save us
In 2017, Dischan Media, long known for visual novel-y bits like Juniper's Knot, hatched a game idea: what if paramilitary magical girls saved the world from alien invaders? Presumably after declining an anime offer from Studio Trigger, work on the game that would become Mahou Arms began, with lead dev Softmode saying, in a recent Reddit post, that the project dates back to "my parents' basement." Today, after about six years in early access, it's finally, properly out on Steam with version 1.0, and boy does it look cool.
Work on Mahou Arms began in the same year that Nier: Automata was released, and that's either a massive coincidence or a strong sign of the sort of character action DNA that was folded in over the years.
This is a third-person action game about two magical girls slicing, dicing, and otherwise beating the daylights out of "an unknown force invading Earth." Like Nier, it folds in a surprising mix of gameplay gimmicks and perspectives, including a strategy game-esque battlefield view.
Melee combat is the meat of the game, with tag-team combos filling a Devil May Cry-style meter to an SSS-grade climax. And if you loved Nier: Automata but were pining to woo 2B, A2, or 9S, you'll be thrilled to hear update 1.0 added romance side quests to Mahou Arms.
"The story has a beginning and end, there's 6-10 hours of not-procedural gameplay, and not a single pixel of generated art, audio, narrative, or code," explains Softmode. "Core dev team of two with contractors for music, sound, voice acting and occasional assets when we can afford it. I haven't slept in 48 hours. I don't know when I'll be able to sleep."
The first bite is with the eye, and my eyes are feasting. Mahou Arms mixes minimalist 3D models and environments with lavish 2D animation to delightful effect. With retro anime vibes paired with the somber piano soundtrack accompanying every trailer I've seen, it all feels laser-targeted at me.
Barring some 1.0 launch wobbles that are purportedly being addressed, Mahou Arms has reviewed pretty well on Steam, sitting at 78% positive lifetime after 542 reviews. "If you have been playing Mahou Arms already, we strongly recommend starting a new game to experience the full story, since more content has been added and changes made to earlier levels," the devs say.
