Head of Marvel TV Brad Winderbaum says that the original concept for Daredevil: Born Again didn't hew very closely to the continuity of the three seasons of the previous Netflix show. However, they were able to step back and realize the importance of the Netflix show and refocus Born Again to be more in line with what came before.
"When the project of Born Again was originally conceived, it was playing a little too fast and loose with continuity. I was kinda like, are we sneaking by? Are we gonna be able to do this?" Winderbaum tells TikTok channel Mic Drop Moments. "I was a fan of the original shows, so it was always like, well, I don't want to contradict anything. But I think there was a little bit of hesitation to embrace all the continuity, the Defenders, inside of the universe."
"When the strike happened, we were able to look at the material. We were like, it was plain. We have to go all-in, which was an amazing opportunity for us," he continues. "And then, you know, we were able to shift gears and develop the rest of the season. But it had established a look that I thought was quite good."

It's been common knowledge that Daredevil: Born Again underwent some retooling during production, reportedly to add more Daredevil to accompany the Matt Murdock courtroom drama. Still, Marvel Studios took care not to run on pure nostalgia for the Netflix series, developing new aesthetics and new ways to explore the themes that made the original great.
"It's different from the original show. It's not like X-Men '97 where we went out of our way to put parameters on it to make it feel like a Saturday morning cartoon. This was a new era, with a new look. And so it's like two different flavors," Winderbaum explains. "What I like about Daredevil: Born Again is leaning into the dichotomy of the two eras of the show in a very heavy way, and that only gets more intense as the season goes on. Because one can't exist without the other. Or, Born Again can't exist without the original. So now that is plainly on the table in an aesthetic way, and an emotional way, and hopefully emotional for the audience."
