After becoming a surprise horror hit, Nicolas Cage is making a new standalone Longlegs movie

A new Longlegs project is in the works from Nicolas Cage and director Osgood Perkins.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "mystery project" isn't being billed as a sequel. Perkins is returning to write and direct the project, with Paramount Pictures picking up the rights to distribution. Cage will, of course, return to star as the creepy, stringy-haired serial killer who also, uh, likes to sing.

The original movie stars Maika Monroe as Lee Harker, a talented new FBI agent assigned to an unsolved serial killer case. As the investigation becomes more complicated and occult evidence is uncovered, Lee realizes a personal link to the ruthless killer and must act quickly to prevent another family murder. You might recall the creepy and cryptic marketing campaign that also surrounded the film... and the fact that we never fully saw Cage's killer in any of the promotional stills or trailers (and neither did Monroe until about halfway through filming).

The report also states that Neon stepped down from producing the project because of its "scope and budget." The original film was made for less than $10 million, and grossed over $180 million at the global box office... making it the highest-grossing independent film of the last 10 years.
