Cyberpunk: Edgerunners writer Bartosz Sztybor has revealed that an alternate fate was planned for David, but it's just as depressing.
Speaking to Anime Corner, Sztybor confirmed, "There was one ending in which David doesn't die entirely. Arasaka gets him, and he ends up fighting in Africa or South America in corporate wars as a robot."
In the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners ending that made it onto our screens on Netflix, David is brutally murdered by Atom Smasher, but not before putting up one heck of a fight against Arasaka's hired muscle. In an extra heart-wrenching twist, his partner Lucy visits the moon after his death, when their dream was to go together.
So, was the original ending a fate worse than death? Becoming a blunt weapon for Arasaka to wage corporate wars overseas would have been a uniquely deflating ending to the Cyberpunk anime, especially when so much of the franchise is already dedicated to showcasing how large global corporations are able to stomp the man on the street underfoot.
Let's hope Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 is a little more upbeat. The new season, once again brought to life by Studio Trigger, is in the works and on the cusp of a reveal.
The first look at the main character was glimpsed this week at Annecy, with CD Projekt Red unveiling a more official look at another Night City denizen on social media. A more concrete announcement is coming on June 29, with an Anime Expo panel to follow in July.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 is currently undated, as is the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
