Mass Effect Andromeda creative director Aaryn Flynn took the stage at Sony's PS4 Pro event today to unveil the first extended glimpse of gameplay for Bioware's upcoming sci-fi RPG. The footage shown was (naturally) running on a PS4 Pro console, and even if you don't have a 4K television set or computer monitor, you'll notice that it looks absolutely stellar.
The brief footage showed our new protagonist exploring the surface of a mysterious planet, scanning alien lifeforms, and leaping across a series of carved, hexagonal platforms. As our hero continues forward, he comes across some creatures going about their own business - they won't attack him if he keeps his distance.
Eventually, he stumbles across a massive, pulsing laser, which transforms into a holographic map. We finally see our crew, including an asari - but their dialog is cut short once they are swarmed by the planet's defenses.
You'll notice how incredible the lighting and particle effects look in this video, which shines and reflects off of surfaces, and fills the air with a soft glow. Unfortunately, I don't have a 4K television to really see the full potential of Mass Effect Andromeda, but even without one, the improvement in the quality of lighting compared to other games is staggering.
