Delving into procedurally generated dungeons to slay pixelated monsters? Sounds great. Rhythm games with awesome music? Count me in. Combining the two into one glorious union!? I'M LOVING MY LIFE. Crypt of the NecroDancer is an idea that I'm shocked no one had before now--and even if they did, I'm certain the execution wasn't this perfect. As the heroic Cadence, you'll venture in the dark unknown of the titular crypt to rescue your father. There's just one catch: every move you make, step you take, and laceration you inflict with the sharp end of your broadsword must be done in time to the beat of some truly excellent chiptunes (composed by none other than Danny Baranowsky).
Of course, if you want to uncover treasure and slay monsters to the rhythm of your own playlist, you can--the game will riff on whatever MP3 file you can throw at it. And after playing for a mere 10 minutes, you'll experience something incredible. Suddenly, your body will become temporarily programmed to do everything to a beat, whether you're actively listening to music or not. The way Crypt of the NecroDancer makes you calculate your best course of action, even as you frantically tap your arrow keys in time to the music, is truly special. It's hard to convey with words, so do me a favor: watch the trailer above, then go buy Crypt of the NecroDancer on Steam. If you don't, I may have to kill you--but rest assured, I will do so to the beat of whatever rhythm is currently running through my head.
