One of the best chillers to emerge from Japan when "J-Horror" first broke through in the West, 2002's Ju-On in which a man killing his family creates a curse which affects anyone who enters the house where they lived – inspired a long-running franchise that's now clocked up its thirteenth instalment.

The fourth feature to be made in the USA, The Grudge is directed by up-and-comer Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes Of My Mother, Piercing). Starring Andrea Riseborough as a single mom detective investigating events at a house in Philadelphia, it's got plenty of jump scares, but also tries to ground the horror in believable relationships, and has some very pretty cinematography.
